Go far enough back, and you will find there were cypress in turners bay. Cypress doesn't grow in saltwater. If the Wiers weren't there, there would be no marsh. Then there is no estuary, because fish, crabs, shrimp, and the things we have would have no where to reproduce. You have to keep some kind of freshwater influence to keep the estuary going. That's the job of the weirs since the ship channel let's so much saltwater in. They can shut the weirs and open up gates on the east side and it keeps freshwater comin in. Only way you get rid of the weirs and keep the system as is is to fill in the ship channel. Not gonna happen. Not trying to start a fight, trust me, I like fish and crabs and shrimp and all that and the weirs do affect them, but what is being done is what needs to be done to protect the marshes as much as possible.

Default Closed?

I was there last Wednesday and saw the big white sign stating "Refuge Closed" but the gate looked open. It may have been right under thewater but it looked like just some pipes or part of the weir's structure blocking the cut. The water was running into the marsh but you could not get a boat through. There was obviously some access because there was a boat fishing the 1st weir on the inside all alone.
