Also Angel Fire New mexico. I have skied there and liked it. you can drive there in about 14 hours as opposed to flying.

Angelfire , red river , & Taos are great New Mexico destinations and driveable
Used to go here during Mardi gras every year growing up and it was always Louisiana peeps everywhere. Lots of fun slopes but always seemed to be a little on the slush side

Wolf creek is awesome if u don't mind make a short commute everyday bc it isn't a ski in ski out setup. Wolf gets the most snow out of all resorts so fresh powder is usually there. Winter park is another I recommend and skier/family friendly
Breck is a lot of fun. Beautiful town nestled in a bowl surrounded by mountains and also has great fly fishing. Dumb and dumber was actually filmed here (substituted for aspen)
I hadn't any probs with waiting during a Christmas/ New Years trip. But I also ended up with emergency knee surgery lol! And that was day "1"

No matter where u go u should have a blast. Love the mountains in the winter. And the full moons are killer in the Rockies!
