Go MathGeek. Nice.

circles are great for reds. 3/0 are fine for slot reds.. something in the 3-5/0 range would probably fine on lightish tackle. I've caught 25 lb stripers on 2/0 circles.

There is another anchor that you can use. You can even make it yourself if you need to. Called a mighty mite or a claw anchor it's basically aluminum prongs like a big grapple hook and if it for somereason can't be pulled back up... then you can put the boat in gear and the prongs will bend and you get your anchor back. You can build one with rebar as well. I don't recommend danforth anchors for the jetties.

mighty mites are great anchors! wish I had all ive lost back. several just at jetties. lost one this year n west cove that came untied. I now have a rubber coated 3 feet chain attached with small shackles to rope and anchor which added another $35 to it. Wasn't too bad when they were $29.99 but now they are $80-$100! When anchoring at jetties tie a separate rope on the hook side. When u pull it up use this rope to do it so hook sides comes up first. I have not lost one doing this. I have lost them by not being able to straighten hooks using boat motor to pull up. Use the extra rope. It Works!

I can see math geek enjoys catching bull reds as much as I do specks lol. Great write up. Any newbie should read that. I like to fish them with much lighter gear but I usually leave them to others in boat after one anyway. I usually always release any over 25" but have kept a few this year to eat. The one tip I would give that hasn't already been said is I would fish Monday-Thursday. Weekends will be tough finding right spot this time of year at jetties.

If there's a crowd, you don't need to be at one of the prime spots shown on the map. Just get close. And use crab. I think the most we've seen at once on the W side (outside) is 6 boats. There's plenty of room for a good spot with 6 boats in all that area.

by the way I use 3/0 circle for everything. Bigger fish will swallow and I just cut line and release.

MathGeek, for an instructional "how to", that was informative AND entertaining. I read every word and my ADD didn't kick in.
Thanks!

So here I am scrolling down the thread excited someone replied and BAM! Awesome post to get me all excited. I appreciate all of the info, keep discussing!

When I fish from the jettie pier I use a 7/0, I'll usually catch a croaker on some light tackle (gulp 3" - 4" shrimp), cut the head off and hook it through the eyes. Last one I caught was a blast. We had some luck on gas station squid too.

I always see boats stacked at 3, 4, and 5. I figured it was the place to be, but observing from the dock....everything is better than the pier......haha.

If the whole area from the end to the break was covered with boats, I'd pick a spot near the end or the break further away from the rocks. Most boats fish too close to the rocks. If you can hit the rocks with a cast you are too close. For me, the perfect distance is where my longest casts toward the rocks only get 1/2 way there, and we also throw away from the rocks and catch as many fish on the rods cast away as those toward. You do not need to be that close to the rocks.

Could we get you to post a Redfish Parmesean recipe now that you've got everyone fired up about bull reds?!
I remember you mentioning it in another thread awhile back and I'd like to try it.

Are you talking about this one? I hope you aren't giving someone else credit for my invention. This is going to make me some money one day. Even the biggest salt life redfish haters smile when they bite into this.

Best way I have found to cook redfish on the half shell
Soak in sprit for 15 to 20 minutes
Remove from Sprite and place in a large baking pan.
Coat each fish with pecan or olive oil.
Lightly spread cajun power garlic sauce evenly over all filets
Sprinkle the following evenly over the Redfish after you have worked oil and cajun power into the fish.
Salt To taste
Red Pepper 1 1/2 table spoons
Black Pepper 2 to 3 table spoons
Coconut Pslam Sugar 3 to 5 table spoons
Garlic Salt 2 to 3 table spoons
Ground Rosemary 2 to 4 table spoons
Grated Parmasian Cheees 1 to 1/2 Cups
Massage all ingredients into fish
Place over Med to Med High charcoal briquettes
About half way through spread shredded Parmasian Cheese over the top of fish .
Try to judge melting the cheese just long enough not to over cook.
Enjoy.

My daughter is off at college now, and it was her recipe. I'm pretty sure she just substituted redfish into a chicken parmesan recipe.

Here's my video for Bacon Wrapped Grilled Margarita Redfish

This fish maxed out 50 pound scale. Now I'm wondering just how big it is.

I did not want to kill it just to see the weight. They probably don't get much bigger.

State record is a bit over 60, but NC produces some BIG bulls!

redchaserron, that is something I have always wanted to try. Fly fishing for reds or trout, takes skill and patients.
