Rat snake would have had a rat in his mouth. No rat = rattle snake in my mind.

To me there are only 2 kinds of snakes, good and bad. See snake, kill snake, identify snake.
Look at belly once dead to identify.
Dual row of scales after the anal plate means they're harmless.
Single row of scales after anal plate means they're venomous.
Very easy to see. It's single all the way to anal plate then either stays the same or changes to two scales going across instead of one all the way across.

Chopped up chicken snake, same as rat snake. Caught some big one's before....they can really squeeze when they get wrapped up around your arm! Seen some up to 6 feet long. I don't mess with the poisonous kind. They always end up dead quick.

You can tell by the head , it is a cotton mouth, check out the previous rat snake pic, the head is not the same. Just goes to show you why you kill it first then identify, would not want a poisonous snake going free around my house because I thought it was a rat snake.

Definitely not a cottonmouth. His head looks that way because he took a severe beating/shooting/shoveling.

When you see 1 rat snake there is usually another one somewhere not to far.

Diamond back water snake. I'd post a picture but don't know how. Killed one on my back porch last year.
