Default First Ever Hunt

My dad asked me to go with him to his lease in Mason, TX for opening weekend and he will let me have two of his deer he gets from the lease since I had been saying I have been thinking about getting into hunting. We drive up Friday and that afternoon we ride around and check all the feeders. While riding to the first feeder we see three doe running in the trees. I'm already getting excited. About half way through checking the feeders while driving between feeders we spot a group of about 20 hogs running by the trees. By the time we draw our guns they are already behind the trees. we drive to the other side of the trees and wait for them to come out but they never did. While at the last feeder a six point buck walks up about 50 yards from us and stands there the whole time we are checking the feeder.

Saturday morning we go to one of the stands and not ten minutes after daylight two hogs show up at the feeder. I pick out the biggest one, shoot and it drops right there. About forty five minutes later about 20 yards in front of the feeder a doe walks out. My dad tells me when I get a shot take it. I shoot and she runs off. We find her about 50 yards from where I shot her.

Saturday afternoon we are hunting a different stand. The feeder goes off and two does come running down the hill to the feeder. Me being my first time hunting I'm ready to shoot but my dad says lets wait for a bigger one. Well watching the hill behind the feeder we saw about 12 deer. Most of them either small or couldn't get a shot off. Next thing I know my dad sees a big doe walk from one set of trees to behind another about 250 yards away. He tells me when she comes back out and I get a shot to shoot her. About 20 minutes later she walks out and just stands there. I shoot and drop her right there.

Sunday morning we decide to go hunt some more hogs since I killed my two deer and my dad is saving the rest of his deer for later in the season. We see two 8 point bucks playing for about 20 minutes. Then a pack of 5 hogs walk to the feeder. I pick out the biggest one and shoot and drop him right there. So I bolt my rifle and try to shoot one of the other hogs but they ran off into the trees. Next thing I know the hog I shot gets up and starts running off. I shot but missed and by the time I bolted the rifle again he was gone in the trees. We go and find blood where he fell but couldn't find any more and searched for forty five minutes but to no avail. That afternoon we hunted another stand and watched a couple of does at the feeder but never saw a hog. Total this weekend between everybody we shot 3 doe and 7 hogs.

So for the long post but this was my first hunting trip and I'm still pumped about it. I'm hooked now.

Congrats on your first. I went to our lease in Laredo, TX last weekend for opening rifle. I didnt see any hogs. Few guys got 2 or 3 though. I saw lots of does and small bucks but have plenty of meat in the freezer and was looking for a wall hanger. Saturday afternoon I saw about a 130" 9 point (16-17" inside) but he was prob only about 2-3 1/2 y/o. Decided to just shoot him with my video camera. Right before dark about 325 yards away i saw what I thought was a hog. I shot and he dropped in his tracks. Walked over there and it was a nasty little javelina. I just drug him in the bushes. They aren't good eating. Hopefully I can make another trip soon.
