Default Exploring Marsh island canals?

Whats up fellas,

I was looking at marsh island on google maps and I see that there are a few openings on the north side of the island. What are the names of these canals that are west of bird island bayou. Also the one that is in michelle cove, i saw a big boat go in that one before but dont know how far they went in. Has anyone ventured into any of these entrances and how far did you go if you did.

I don't have a map in front of me, but by memory, as you move west from Bird Island Bayou - Bayou Platte, Bayou Lucien, Bayou Michael, Bayou Chene, Little Charles bayou, Big Charles bayou. All are pretty deep, very navigable into the interior of the island. Most have oyster reefs in them, watch your depth finder and can be excellent fishing for reds late summer into fall. These are very popular when the bay is too rough.
I think Bayou Platte is closed off because it is a shorebird nesting area.

Plenty of draft to the end of BI Bayou. Also plenty in the canal heading East into Oyster Lake. The lake is shallow, however, with the depth rising to 3ft or so just inside the lake. I was in a 24ft Blue Wave so I did not venture in very far and worked the banks a little.

I was told that you can catch some reds in that lake and the one north of it.

It definitely would but the water is too skinny for my draft....at least with my limited knowledge of the waters. I'm not in the habit of using my lower unit as a sacrificial depth sounder any more!

My boat has never been within 1.5 miles of the shore line for this reason, I only get close when I'm going to and from the launch.

Best time to go inside and see how low the water is during the winter time. Get pretty shallow in some spot, can't get to my honey hole no more with my offshore boat.

This is the time of year to learn Marsh Island. Take a day with learning on your mind only and go as far as you can and take note of all the areas out of the water and where the channels are. Then when spring gets here you can slip back in places no one else can its the best way to find solitude if that's what you're after. I did this about 4 years ago and I'm glad I did I can almost always fish even when it's ruff in the bay and 90% of the time limit on reds.

I agree with Pathfinder 2200. This is a great time of the year to pick your days, bundle up and explore.
