I have this exact camera. It is a great camera but a LOT of camera, if you know what I mean. I bought it for my wife for Mother's day and she loves it. She took a class at Mcneese for 3 nights and it was the best $180 spent. She learned all about the camera and enjoys it more due to the class. However, if you are used to DSLR cameras then you will love this Nikon.

I'm a Canon DSLR fan myself..

But I looked over the specs with the D3100.
Looks like a good camera. Are you wanting to get into it (breaking out of the shell of auto settings) and going into the other shooting modes? (P,AV,TV,etc)

If your wanting to shoot in the advanced modes, go to a MSU class. If in the standard auto modes, I wouldn't go to the class.
What size glass does it come with? I have a 55-70 and a 75-300. Will probably upgrade the 75-300 soon

I bought a package deal for $799 and it came with the 18-55 mm and the 55-200 mm lenses. Look online for coupons. I got mine at Best Buy. AND you can finance for ZERO interest for 18 months.

What lens are you looking to upgrade to?

I like my EF70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM still takes great photo's.

Dropping some bones on that lens. Stepping up in class. Good lens with great reviews.

it'll be awhile before I get it. It'll be a toss up between this lens, or a power pole.
