Zeiss makes a pair for about 400-500. Dont get too high of magnification, 8 or 10 is perfect. Make sure you don't get real small obective lenses or else your light gathering abilities will be diminished.

I own some Nikon Monarchs. They are pretty nice, but I find my focus moves constantly and there seems to be no way to lock it down. Many times I have seen deer back in the brush that I would not have seen otherwise. You can peer right through the woods and see deer coming well before they get to you. They work really well in a clear cut situation.

Ol Mikey got bit by the hunting bug. You won't regret the 2grand you spend on them ELs.. Then while you're at it, go ahead and reserve a spot for two on a trophy white tail hunt down in Mexico.

I can get you a deal on the Zeiss Conquest 12X45's but my biggest savings will be on the Leupolds. Can save a lot more $$ that route...

Most shops will let you try different sets outside. I would show up around dusk and get the salesman to bring few different sets outside so that you can see which pair works best for you. Focus in on something around the furthest distance you'll actually use them... Get Whichever one is clearest for you. Any store that won't let you try them in a realistic type condition, well, I don't know if I'd shop there.
