Default Fly fishing help!

I am looking to purchase a new rod and reel and am in need of some advice.
What line weight and rod length would be best for largemouth bass, redfish, and speckled trout? If there is nothing for all three, bass is the most important since that's what I'm after 80% of the time.
Also, any reel, line, etc. recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Pretty tough question to answer as I'm not sure what lures and techniques you will be using. I carry nothing lighter than medium for bass. My favorite all around rod is a 6'9" kistler medium heavy. Just depends on how I'm fishing though. That kistler is always in the boat. As far as reels its hard to beat shimano chronarch of curado, but have had good luck with some abu garcia's too. line used could be 12lb suffix mono on up to 40lb suffix braid for flipping.

I'm no expert on fly fishing but from what i know, you can use as light as a 6 weight rod if your catching smaller bass on smaller flies / streamers. or use up to a 9 weight for throwing the bigger bass bug flies & streamers. I would imagine a good combo weight would be either a stout 8 or 9 weight rod. Its not so important for bass but for red's I would want a rod with real good long distance castability.

Use a weight forward line, I think you can actually buy line that is weighted forward appropriately for bass bug type flies....

IMO the reel on a fly rod is really just there to hold the line so.... just pick up an inexpensive one thats weighted well for the rod you buy.

Pick yourself a nice calm afternoon, and get out there on some skinny water and have a blast.

This should help a bit.... generally speaking you want the same for reds/specks as you do for bass... just in a package that will cast furthur as they spook easier.

8 Wt. Is a great all round rod for the 3 species. WF floating 8 wt line . Just go to heavier leader / tippet for reds.

Wt: While bream fishing with a 4/5 wt rod/line with small arbor reel, I've landed as large as a 2.5 to 3lbs bass. It wasn't exactly "secure," but it worked.

Style: Unless you are looking for a rod that is going to work well for streams, go with a full 9ft rod. 8/9 wt would be just right. Getting one made for salt water will assure you have enough backbone to hoss out a big bass and keep from any rod breaking while fighting a red.

Reel: For bream, bass, etc...the reel is mostly just a line control system. I never "fight the fish" on the reel. You just strip line. However, big bass, heavier cover, redfish, etc....You would be fishing in a way that you would want a reel that has a drag system that you can set. Whether you get a heavier medium arbor reel or a lighter large arbor reel is up to you.

Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO) has good stuff. I use St. Croix. Orvis is well priced (entry at least) and has salt stuff. I buy used...but i feel like fly fishing more than conventional fishing...the rod quality is of HIGH importance!

Hope this helps! PM if I can be of further help

Reel does not mean much in fly fishing for bass and redfish due to they never really tear into a drag like a bonefish.

8wt or 9wt on heavier side would be a good weight rod
WFF (weight forward floating good start again 8wt or 9wt)
Don't need to get into sinking line at the beginning
In surf I use a intermediate, but a WFF a good all around line

Many good brand of rods in 8wt
Temple Fork
St croix
Sage
Powell
Orvis
Redington
What taper you like and how much you want to spend.
I buy alot of my rods off ebay or flyfishing sites.

They got alot of good fly clubs around the state start at laflyfish.com
Most have a fly federation casting instructor or people who help people before the meeting on casting a fly rod.
Great time to learn how to cast a rod and possibly try to some rods to see what you like.
Not every rod is made for everyone you got fast action, medium action, and slower action rods. Each has a purpose.

Thanks for the help guys and sorry for the late reply! Have been pretty busy

I ended up ordering an Allen Alpha III reel and an Allen Xa 8wt rod. I had a lot of recommendations on different companies from people I know and you guys so it was a tough decision! However, after looking around and talking and emailing people... Allen's customer service seems unbeatable and their prices are great as well.

Should get them in either tomorrow or Saturday and will be making a bass pro or cabelas trip. I'm planning on getting the rio redfish line but have no clue about backing and leaders..... Any recommendations?

Thanks again!!
Blake
