The federal government expanded the boundaries of the closed fishing area in the Gulf of Mexico today, bringing the ban closer to Texas.
The closed area is now within 30 miles of Texas for the first time since BP's ill-fated Macondo well began fouling the Gulf 83 days ago. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, citing public safety concerns, said the closure comprises 84,101 square miles, about 35 percent of federal waters in the Gulf. The ban stretches from Louisiana to Florida, but does not apply to state waters. NOAA spokeswoman Kim Amendola said the agency's forecasts do not indicate when -- or if -- the closed area will stretch to waters off the Texas coast. "That is all dependent upon where the oil moves or is projected to move," she said. |

So if it don't apply to state waters, Big Lake is OK but is there any word on whether oil is headed for Big Lake and if so will action be taken to keep the oil out and the fishing open.

The National Guard has set up a camp on the West side of the Ship Channel. They and the OEP are ready in case the oil starts to creep up towards the mouth of the river. 99% of the large GOM and East Coast skimers are at the spill site. Our local shrimpers are the best hope for skimming right now. |

I read a lot when I work nights. But I have not read this anywhere.
They can close the federal areas, but not the state ones. I think. In SW La., most of the wildlife refuges are mostly protected or can be protected. |
