Question Noise

How much effect do you think a trolling motor or depth finder has on fish? I've noticed that my depth finder makes a clicking sound. I know this sound is used to bounce off the bottom then back to the transmitter to determine depth. Once I'm in an area that I'm comfortable with, I will turn off my depth finder and use my trolling motor as little as possible. Do You think this matters in 4 or 5 feet of water or less?

I think the trolling motor does, even in deeper water.
I try to drift over where I am fishing and not use the trolling motor unless I have to.
Also don't throw anything, even a lure onto the dash of the boat.
Don't jump down onto the floor of the boat, step down quietly.
Don't drop the lids on ice chest, hatch covers or tackle boxes.
Don't drop rods into rod holders.
Don't raise or lower the motor.
The smallest noises will go a long way thru water.
Aluminum boats are a little more noisy than fiberglass, so you have
to be more careful in them.

yes it affects them, even more so this time of year as the water gets colder. Sound travels farther through colder water. It was always benefit everyone out there if everyone tried to stay as quiet as possible.

There are too many of those guys who have $30K to $70K boats that they
jump out of to wade.
If I was a wader, I'd have a cheap alum. boat with a 25 hp to get me there.
Not a nice center console that I would jump out of, get the floors muddy,
then have to clean it up.

Once again I agree with Ray, Fish can hear hull slap, ice chests slamming, and for sure trolling motors. We used to chase the reds back in the Grand Bayou shallows. When a school was up munching shrimp and mullet on some days they would go down when you started the trolling motor 75 yards away. A push pole was better but then they could see you standing up. Other days the trolling motor didn't bother them as much. It seemed to be better to keep it on all the time and speed it up or slow it down gently. I think that big trout have learned to associate boat sounds with danger.

I am pretty new to chasing redfish in the flats and I seem to spook more with motion than sound.....again my experience is limited
