Default Question about the West Cove launch

Fished here a little over a month ago. The first day wasnt very good. On the way in I saw a good flow of water under the control structure. Ended up catching a few nice specks on the lake side of th weir before sun went down. Next morning was almost the exact same story, except there was no water movement.

Has anyone else had experience catching specks here? I've only fished BL a few times but this is the only spot I've caught specks well at. Was hoping to head back soon and didn't know if this was a fluke or what.

Not a fluke... are you fishing from boat? I dont think you can fish the lake side of the locks from land. I could be wrong but i think there is a sign there.

I was in a kayak right up on the rocks. Kind of hard fishing over the cables and whatnot but caught some nice trout. I might have to head there and try again.

Thanks guys.

Also I was fishing with a cork right up next to the concrete. Is there a better way to do it?

Also, you aren't supposed to by structure from boat. There are signs posted to the east of launch. NO FISHING BEYOND THIS POINT. Or something to that nature. Just be careful if game wardens are around.

You can fish those canals (Off the Main) for reds.. but not by motorized boat. Also there are a few reefs that are within paddling distance from the opening.

You can do like specklebutthole and get on the west side of the weir and cast ur super spook over the fence.

Seriously, ur too close. The sign that you can't fish past is east of the lunch. I believe the ticket for fishing beyond that sign runs close to $300.

****. Saw the sign about no fishing from the land but not the other. Guess I will reconsider.

Like others said. Cannot fish within sign which is outside casting distance to the east. Know several buddies who got tickets for being too close to weir.

There is plenty of good fishing in the lake... if you drive all the way to West Cove you might as well make that paddle. Just saying I wouldnt drive that far if I was just going to fish the lock... If you catch the lake on a good tide it can be great fishing.

They increased the fine to $500 and installed several infrared cameras in order to monitor the site 24/7. I would never cast there again if I were you. Head to Blue Crab Rec. That's where the aforementioned star tournament trout was caught. Also, the south bank of west cove is probably the best area of all Big Lake to fish. Specktator caught 20+ trout all exceeding 4lbs along that bank one morning.

And ButtCheeks still wouldn't have been able to catch a trout that morning.

South bank of W Cove is the BEST summer time, BIG TROUT spot in the whole state... look for signs of a reef. GOOD LUCK!
