The MAERSK NAUTILUS is now under her own power and is on the way to a safe anchorage where she will anchor until USCG/Class inspections are complete. She will be followed by the assist tugs until she is safely anchored.

Tugs are going to help..... Ok
Someone explain how a couple of tugs are gonna control a 1,000+ ft tanker filled with that much weight.... |

It is a problem when it is headed for one of the biggest oil and gas producing platforms in the GOM.

The tugs that are coming out are big enough to do that job. It needs at least 2, but they can do it.

They are ocean going tugs. They move drilling rigs and pull crude barges.

16,500 Horsepower.
Props are 165 inches high. They can pull anything that floats. |

my dad use to be a captain of a tug pushing barges on the mississippi river, if you ever seen the barges that were being pushed and the size of the tug compared to the barges, you wouldn't doubt the power!

this spring the carnival splendor a 113000 ton cruise ship had an engine room fire and was sitting dead off the baja coast . a lone tug from mexico named the chihuahua was first on scene and began towing the splendor back to California by itself.
If you look at the pics on the web, the Chihuahua doesn't look near as big as the tugs in the pics here. |
