who thinks this is real ?
Who says that you can't catch fish after a hard freeze? Of course, the natives know that when that happens you don't even need a rod and reel! These trout were "caught" Saturday morning by a couple of local Grand Isle guys behind Elmer's Island with dip nets. The guys told me that the last time that happened was in 1989. The trout were stunned by the sudden temperature change and were trapped in shallow water when the tide fell. The largest was over 7 lbs and the next over 6lbs. Most were 3-4 lbs. There were 22 trout in the bottom of that pirogue. It was quite a sight. I would never have imagined that trout like that were still in shallow water close to the Gulf. |

With the sudden temp change we had all along the coast, I think it's entirely possible. Now, which coast is another question.

In 89 the game wardens allowed everyone who wanted to scoop up dying specks and reds but daily limits did apply. There are fish this size caught every winter / spring in the GI area. Most are caught by locals who don't open their mouth about them or folks that have Been bank fishing for many years and know where these fish go when it gets cold. Dont fool yourself into thinking that thereare no mule trout in that area. And i'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the area that these fish came from has water 18 - 20 ft. deep close by. |

Hey Eman,
You & I definitely know the locale of such places that could happen down there. When it's been cold before down there (not a hard freeze, but cold), those bigguns get lethargic and come to the top right next to the bank underneath the mullet. I personally saw a guy scoop one in his net that pushed 8 lbs plus (boga weighed) Your brother and the regular Crew were with me and can attest. There are some big ones down there this time of year for sure, but you need to be in the right spot at the right time. The "Locals" know for sure. |

I always catch large trout in that area. My second largest trout of my life came from that area in the early springtime.

They did not allow anyone to pick up dead trout or redfish during the last big freeze in Big Lake. They were patroling and also stationed wardens at launches to let you know that. |

Guess the GW over there are just aholes . In G.I. they told us no use letting the fish go to waste. Made sure we had fishing license and stuck to the limits. They did write a BUNCH of tickets to folks that just couldn't pass up filling up ice chest w/ frozen fish.

I said it was a waste, they said it was a natural cycle of life.
They were wearing a badge. They won. |

This i real, i live around the area and know the people who did this. And why would yall wanna call the game wardens? Would you rather them fish rot and be crab food?? I think some people are just jealous that they don't have a story or picture like this to share !

If you live in the area ,You know the spots garfish and i are speaking of. If folks could see the size of some of the trout caught within 100 yds of la1 in the winter w/o a boat , It would just blow their minds. Since katrina , some folks have figured out where these trout go in the summer also. and it aint to ensco! |

My lil bro' fished the area on Tuesday. Caught only reds, flounder and sheepshead. NO trout, go figure. Caught reds mainly on a spoon and minnows. Sheepies w/ skrimps, & flounder w/ minnows. Tried other arties for the trout, but couldn't get bit.
