There are a lot more options in Big Lake to get out of the chop or make something work for given wind and tide conditions. It's also a shorter run to try a few different things if the initial plan falls short. Lake P is harder to fish and you will usually burn more gas and spend more time running around than Big Lake. There is a lot more structure though which is appealing on calm days.

The worst day of my childhood was the day we moved from Lake Charles to New Orleans and the difference in fishing between Calcasieu and Ponchatrain was part of the reason why.

Lake P, very soft bite on most days that is hard to feel. No place to hide in highwind.

I think Big lake is only b/c I fish I Lake P more and have become accustomed to it. Fished Big Lake 2x and have yet to do anything. Any place you fish regularly you will become better in the area and produce more fish.

Never fished Lake p but big lake is hard to fish in its own way. If you don't know you won't do good I dont think you can just go and smash em first time, well I couldn't!! But now that I know a good bit about it I never scratch anymore but then again Hardly ever limit out on trout. Came close to a 3 man limit a few times.(34 and 38) but never 45.

I've never fished big lake, but I can't see how fishing a shallow lake can be harder then fishing one that is twice or 3x as deep in some spots and we don't have a lot of structure, only the east half of the lake is worth fishing.

I fish Lake P a bunch and have fished Big Lake maybe 5 times. My first trip to Big lake I caught some really nice specs just fishing moving water north of Heberts landing. Guess I got real lucky being a first timer and all and have done well there several other times.
It took me years to learn Lake Pontchartrain and from time to time get skunked out there but I have pulled some mean *** stringers from that long bridge.

So in my opinion I would probably say Lake Pontchartrain is tougher to learn to fish if that is indeed the question but as we all know,on any given day it can be feast or famine depending on conditions which both bodies of water are Susceptible to.

Thanks bro.
Hey,put in enough work and anyone can be sucessfull anywhere.
I come here for reports on where to try my luck on big lake because I dont get out over there enough to patern the fish especially when theres a ton of fresh water in the lake it helps out .
I give reports good or bad to try to help out my fishing family "all of you" so maybe we can all be a little more productive.
Hey , I appreciate this site and will be a lifelong member because Jerremy Waltrip helped me out on my very first trip out to Big Lake.
I'll return the favor for him or anyone else on this site just because of that.
