Lynch world champion box call. I use that and love it. Also have a Primos Box Cutter, great for cutting on, its pretty much my morning call cause I can do pretty good fly down cackles on it. Also have a Primos lil jack glass pot, and a TrampStamp Slate. I would suggest getting your hands on a good slate and a box. Boxes are loud, and when that turkey is in close, doesn't do much good. Slates, especially the tramp stamp, can get loud and really soft.
Also have to think about good water proof calls. Primos wet box is my go to box, and the lil jack is glass, so it works in the rain. Gotta have a water proof striker though, a carbon H&S strut is my go to. Whatever you do, get on it quick and get a good feel for it. Only got 3 weeks to the Opener. |

I mean, if you think you can pick up on a mouth call in 3 weeks, go for it. I didn't mention mouth calls cause I still haven't picked up on them. Just can't get them to fit right. And they take time to learn, most people will suggest if you're going to pick up on a mouth call, start using them at least 3 months before the season.
But by all means, if you think you can do it, go on and do it man. More power to ya. But primos and Flextone offer some cool little gadgets that hook onto your gun or strap to your leg for one handed operation. Can't recall what flextone's gun harness is called, but Primos line is The Freak. Pot and box calls. Gerald uses a pot I believe. Pretty cool, or you can rig something up yourself. I practice calling with my box or pot and sitting with my gun in shooting position. If you were gonna go mouth calls though, get a clean double. Nothing with any fancy cuts or any of that to start with. All those cuts create rasp and they just cover up the imperfections of your calling. I would say go for an H&S strut starter pack or one of the primos packs. That way you have multiple calls that you can work with and you may mess one up trying to get the fit right in your mouth. I have the H&S strut pack and it comes with a calling CD. Great pack. |

I have a MADD dog river otter box that I use for mid day running and gunning once I get something fired up I'll switch to mouth calls. I like the primos mouth call and also the HS strut. Just find something that fits your pallet good. Some mouth calls are too bulky for me and will make me gag.

Great info! Thanks guys. They seem to range all the way to $100.....are these birds that picky with the sound?

They are all different. And remember the worst thing you can do is over call. And it's very easy for a beginner to over call. Anyone who turkey hunts has been guilty of it. On tv they show lots of calling but they are splitting camera and trying to sell calls. When one answers you he can pin point 99% your exact location. You'll have the urge to keep calling to hear that gobble but just sit tight.

The push/pull looks pretty easy to use.....small box tho..
Hows the sound? |

Another thing to keep in mind is they sound farther than they really are. I have bumped several birds trying to get closer when they weren't as far as I thought they were to begin with.

Good advice from Dawg. And don't worry too much about the price of calls. Find one that sounds good to you and that you can get good sounds out of. You will hear stories all the time about people hearing what they think is another hunter with the worst sounding box call ever, only to find out it is a hen. "Some of the worst calling I've ever heard was a turkey hen", is something you will hear A LOT!!
Get a bunch of calls and try em out. Doesn't hurt. Besides, you will handicap yourself severely if you only have one or two calls. The more calls, the better chance you'll have one that will get him hot. |

A turkey can cover a lot of ground a lot faster than you think.

A really good first call to try is a scratch box call.
You will have to find on the internet but they are simple to use and work. http://www.cedarhill-gamecalls.com/T...ube_calls.html |

I have found that box calls make a much more realistic sounding bouncing hen, but if that ol tom hangs up out there, a subtle refuge feed call with that diaphragm will sure bring em on in
