I had one in the tree that I recently cut down. They are a VERY elusive creature but funny to watch if they don't know you are watching.

I know a guy that has a couple, his pets, he caught them himself...I can probably get his trap design for you if you want.
Have you looked at Sugar Gliders? You can get them in pet stores, they are the Australian (i think) version of a flying squirrel.

Very crude but should get you carpenters close enough to complete it. I use to catch them and sell them when I was in Jr. High. Made pretty good change back then at a wopping .75 cents per squirrel

Flying squirrel trap.
Items needed
1 x 4 approx 6 ft long
finishing nails
sheet rock screws
string
cloths pin
drill

Cut board into needed pieces. 1 at 16 inches 2 at 13 inches, 1 @ 12 inches
and 1 at 14 inches. 16 inch board goes upright with 14 inch as floor of trap. 16 inch goes on top at end of 14 inch making a 90 degree angle. 13 inch boards go on either side and screwed into side of 16 and from side of 13 inch into side of 14 inch floor.
The lid is made by taking the 12 inch board and placeing it between the two 13 inch boards. Drill a hole a little larger than the nails thickness you are using about 1 1/2 inch from the back of the 13 inch board on top so that the 13 inch board can be nailed thru to the 12 inch board causing it to swivel up and down. Cut a small piece to close the opening with it level with the side boards and secure it from the top of the 12 inch board. Now place a nail inside the 14 inch board about 5 inches from the back and nail in just deep enough that the nail is firmly in place. Now, drill a small hole about 1 inch above the floor from the back and thru 16 inch board. Another nail will need to be placed on top and about 1 inch from the front of the door or opened end of the door. Just enough to be firmly in place.
Tie a string to the door nail, run it over the 16 inch board and thru the drilled hole. With the door opened about 2 inches, measure
the string at the inside nail and tie the cloths pin to it. ( seperate the close pin from spring and use one half )
There is a groove where the pin spring was, This groove should slide over the nail and the tension of the door should hold the close pin to the nail while the door is open. You can use walnuts, or pecans(my favorite bait) or peanut butter on the cloths pin for bait. Place it on a limb or fork of a hollowed oak tree. When the squirrel goes into the trap, he will trip the trap and the lid will close him in.
Remember!!!!! they can and will bite the crap out of you till they tame down. Have your cage ready before you trap. I hope this is not too hard to understand.
