Default opti oil?
Is it ok to run premium plus in an optimax or do I have to run the opti oil?

Read your owners manual,mercury wants you to use the dfi opti oil. Premium plus is ok as a last resort.

What is the reason for needing to run the dfi oil? I understand its a full synthetic but besides that are there any other advantages?

Runs cleaner,less carbon build up,your 20 dollar plugs last longer,better fuel economy,and recommended from mercury.

I disagree with this.......I spoke to 6 mercury warranty mechanics and all of them said the Merc oil is the same damn thing as Premium plus!

Talk to the Merc guys at the Houston boat show last year and they said the same thing! running Merc oil is what the book wants you to run... Face to face they said run Premium Plus and it does not affect your warranty either!

I never said anything about warranty,mr know it all. DFI oil and premium plus are NOT the same!

Effective October 2010, Mercury OptiMax / DFI or Quicksilver DFI 2-Cycle engine oil is the recommended oil for all OptiMax models - including Pro XS. (The previous recommendation stated the use of Mercury Premium Plus 2-Cycle Outboard Oil in ProXS models and OptiMax oil in non-ProXS models.)

OptiMax / DFI oil is a superior oil when compared to the Premium Plus oil. While both products are high quality 2-cycle engine oils suitable for use in OptiMax engines, the OptiMax / DFI oil contains a higher percentage of additives that reduce carbon deposit formation.


Over time, under normal operating conditions, carbon deposits accumulate in the power cylinder (piston, cylinder head, liners). In most cases the carbon deposits do not create a problem, but carbon deposits that form on the piston - particularly behind the piston rings and piston skirts - can reduce engine life and performance.


OptiMax / DFI oil is specially formulated to prevent the carbon deposits from forming. It also does a better job of reducing existing carbon deposits than the Premium Plus oil. Going forward, the Operation, Maintenance and Warranty manuals for OptiMax outboards will recommend Mercury OptiMax / DFI or Quicksilver DFI 2-Cycle engine oil to help maximize engine life and performance."

So what? The Mercury "people" told W it would be ok to use the Premium Plus.

It is ok to use Premium plus...why not??? You get your motor serviced every 100 hours so like it matters what oil you use...

And Like the guy from Merc said at the boat show!!! Who are we to tell you to buy our oil? You use what you for your boat!

Also someone like me who runs 250 plus hours a year is not going to use opti oil... Quick Sliver oil is the same thing!

No problems on my motor!!

Just run what merc suggest to run. Is a 3 dollar difference really that much? Don't understand the people who can afford a 15k motor try and run lesser quality oil.

Your a dumbass...there are 75 guides who run opti and not one use Merc oil........ Its not about what you can afford , its like buying a name brand when the cheaper works fine!

I bet all the ones who own Haynies on here run Quicksilver!! Because Chris told us to run that!

Why buy a brand new rig and run cheap oil? Wouldnt u want it to last? Montaulk posted a merc bulletin stating if u use opti ur motor will last longer and be more efficient. U bought a merc cause u thought it was the best so why not trust them when they tell u to run the good ****...., dumbass
