Default Ungrateful SOB!

I'm sorry, but I have to vent, so please bear with me. I can't hold it in any longer and don't care who sees this.

This past Saturday, we had a hog hunt in which we took some hogs, one of which was a big ugly boar that tore up two dogs good. We ended up calling the hunt to care for the dogs after that and didn't end the day until about 5 that afternoon.

After getting cleaned up and eating supper w/ the wife, my phone rings. It's a guy that has some friends in the woods at their lease in Krotz Springs that has shot at two deer and can't find them. It is 7:20 on a Saturday night and somehow he has gotten my number and knew I had a tracking dog. After a short conversation, I tell him I will go out there, especially since we are still in training with him and need the time in the woods. However, I tell him we need the hunters to get out of the woods to allow the human scent to thin out, and wait for us to get there. I also learn the deer were shot with buckshot, which I am not a fan of.

After loading up, and hitting the road, I remember that my brother in law is on his way back from his lease in Jackson and has his dog w/ him. I call him and he says he wants to come also, since they possibly have 2 deer down. We arrive at the site at 8:35, and after a 200 yard wallk through the woods, we get to the hit site. The blood they show us is minimal at best, not much more than what you would find in a workshop when someone cuts his finger. The dogs both run the same line of track and turn hard right 100 yards from the hit site and bring us to a slough about 10 yards wide and 2-3 feet deep. The only blood we found was at the hit site, but the dogs both come to the slough in the same exact spot. The hunter tells us the deer sounded like they were further north and doesn't think the deer crossed there. Now, he tells us he is not sure if he hit one, or both, or which one was standing where the blood was.

I tell my bro-n-law, those deer crossed there and we need to get to the other side. Neither one of us had waders, so he gets escorted back out to the road where they bring him around to a foot bridge and put him on the other side of the slough (more like a bayou). It was a jungle and absolute horrible walk for him in some real bad stuff. He finally gets across from me and tells me, "dude - I got blood right here". Sure enough, the deer crossed there! I have a pair of bib overalls on top of warm ups so I decide I would bring the dogs over by walking through after shedding the bibs. I get over to the other side and immediately the dogs run the track back to water. The land on the other side of the bayou was low and incredibly flooded. It got so deep, my dog was actually swimming at times and stopped tracking. I brought him back to high ground and returned to where he stopped. I continue another 20 yards past his stopping point and find a fat doe about 130# dead in the water.

I drag the deer back to the ridge, get the dogs back across the slough, then drag the deer across to the "good" side of the woods. We walk out, I get my dry bibs back on, and we load all our dogs and gear up. The only thing we did not do was drag the deer to the truck!

Here is my beef! Not a six pack, or a $20 bill for gas, or a gift certificate to Chuckie Cheese. Could not believe that! I was raised different I guess. I don't charge for tracking a deer, unless it is on a paid hunt, and then I charge the outfitter, not the shooter. I wasn't charging for this track either, and that was discussed before hand, but I mean throw a brother a bone! I don't need the gas money and have my own beer, but found it strange! We both left feeling like the ugly girl w/ the wet spot after prom if you know what I mean!

All I'm saying is if you get help from strangers, let them know you appreciate it!

I couldn't agree more! The way I was raised, was always to comp a man for his time or fuel regardless of circumstances.

That's just me though.

We'd been boxing if I were him because I would have offered you something and would have been offended if you declined! LOL

They are called Jagdterrier, pronounced "Yack -terrier", known across the big pond has the German hunt terrier. Awesome little dogs! They only get about 25 pounds and about 14-16" tall at the highest, but are some bad mothers! My male is dual purpose, blood tracking/hog hunting, but my female only likes to chew on a pig!

Shawn we surely need to hook up! I love running hogs in the marsh, especially when we go out for LDWF and do it out of airboats, WAY COOL! Have you ever seen a dog jump out of a moving airboat in pusuit of a wild boar? Funny stuff!

These little dogs are not "suppose" to catch, but we have one that thinks he is a 95 pound pit. He is actually the father of my pup owned by Mr. Buddy Goatcher of Carencro, and his name is Bart. Simply incredible to watch him work, but his bad a** attitude got him in trouble Saturday and he was the one that got the worse end of the injuries! Just like any other hog dog, some get "gritty" and once a dog moves in, they all wnat a piece of hair!

They are used overseas for bear and wild boar, as well as varmit hunting which the farmers take very seriously over there. I want to attend some Croatian hunts when I make a "bucket list" since Croatia has the biggest and meanest boar anywhere in the world. I love the fact that these dogs can be a house pet, blood tracker, hog dog, and are willing to die to protect his "family".

thats cool, he have some guys that have been running currs with a pit catch dog with permission and while running crab pots over the summer crossed them and their dogs were real bad off. They only brought 2 currs that day and the pit, which has the full kevlar vest, and the currs were real bad off and the pit wasn't much better. They said that the pit grabbed the boar and the boar threw him then the currs went to help and he said they did no good other than to get the boar off the pit, still when they got to them the pit had the boar down but they had to carry the currs out. Truely a sad site, but they were back out there the next week with stitches and staples lol crazy.

Props to you and your brother. I cannot stomach losing animals. I know nothing goes to waste in nature but the thought of losing something as large as a deer gets to me. I've spent lots of time tracking and finding deer others had shot when they had long given up hope. Hard to believe they didn't offer some meat at least...

I can't figure out how these dogs know what is going on. As long as their is a fight, they are in it. Once the hog is subdued, then you notice the injuries. And while I am stiching or stapeling, they just lay there and don't move. Then they get up and lick you to death like I did something special. Hell, i should be licking them! We do our best to keep them safe, but they are working dogs and things happen. The little Jags are so fast, they usually are the last to get cut. The catch dogs have gear on and still get hit every so often. I like cur dogs in general, but they are somewhat slow in CQB (close quarters battle) lol, but have better range than the Jags. If I was younger, I would run Cur/Plott hound cross - but since I am getting older and fatter, I like my little Jags to take it nice and easy!

Please don't get me wrong, we have freezers full of meat, and both have comfortable lifestyles, just rubbed me the wrong way if that makes sense. My dad would have whipped my butt if 2 strangers do that for me and I didn't offer something!

Fin,

That sucks man - sounds like they were trash to me.

I want to go hog hunting too. Really just want to be along for the show....no need to make the kill or anything. Let me know if you can make it happen one day.

FFF, have you or someone in your group of hunters ever tried to film a hog hunt...I bet that would make a great you tube video...

Really Pisses me off...And you are a better person than me because I would've flat out ask this guy " you need anything else,....Masta?"
