Hebert's Landing Launch/bait shop?

So over the weekend while I launched at Hebert's I noticed that some bait tanks had been installed and it looked like the old joint had been updated slightly. Does anyone know what they are planning on doing with that old building?

Also I noticed what looked to me like an old pedestal mount for a fuel pump. Did Hebert's used to have fuel?

Lastly can anyone fill me in on the history of the old launch building. What it used to be, what people have attempted to make it?

I assume that you are talking about the two story building right by the launch. It used to be Harbor Lights restaurant. Yes and there used to be a fuel pump on the north side of the launch. I think hurricane Rita took care of that and it wasn't ever fixed.

Yea they have bait set up but last year the guy said he was going to start selling live shrimp but he never did !

He spent a month getting all those tanks ready but I guess he never got his shrimp boat working ?

Sounds like you need to invest in a shrimp boat, The Duba Gump.

Before that building they had a little 2 story set up in the late 90's. Had fuel, beer , food. They tried selling shrimp but always had trouble keeping shrimp alive(water too warm). they ended up moving the water intake out in the lake about a 100 yards which seemed to help. but nothing like deep water (colder). It was always a hassle to keep happy medium between 3rd party shrimper and store. Had heard to sell gas they would have to put new tanks in but the cost was not worth it.

And before that building, I can remember in the early-mid 80's there was a run down store that a blind man ran....I think he was an Hebert! Maybe someone older than me can contribute a little more than what I can remember from my childhood. I would love to see an old picture of that place!

It just blows my mind that that the place and community couldn't support a little marina shop/café type eatery. Granted there isn't even close to enough traffic to warrant a full time restaurant but I would imagine a small bait shop/ marina store(similar to spicers) and also have fuel. Fuel can be brought in in aboveground tanks behind a fence. With maybe a little window shop that sells breakfast sandwiches or something simple and some beer wouldn't work. Even maybe carry a little bit of supplies for the locals. Beer and Cheetos ya know

i wish they would do something at crab lady landing. Now that place was busy and packed back in the day. Boats would park overnight and line the canal the night before shrimp season if you can picture that. It had a little store also.

crab lady is the canal that is between blue camp and pelican point. Its right off big lake hwy between old settlement and the turn to heberts. There is a chain going across the old ramps now.

Ah okay I actually saw this past weekends a couple trucks with trailers at that little bend in the road. I remember thinking where the heck are they launching to.

Crab lady used to be a nice launch but the canal has mudded in since the hurricanes.
Hebert's is tight for two boats to launch at the same time and also pretty shallow on low tide. That leaves Calcasieu Point as the only decent launch on the East side.
West side has Ellender which is pretty good and does have campsites, Dugas, Spicers, Hackberry public launch, Hog Island, West Cove, and you can even include the Ferry launch but it was in pretty poor shape the last time I launched there. The East side could certainly use another public launch but Crab Lady would take a lot of work.

I was going to point this out. This launch is in great shape, has lots of parking, and is close to lots of good fishing.

In the spring and summer months, you may want to bring a hoe or a rake or otherwise be prepared to move a bit of seaweed out of the way before backing down. Driving over the seaweed can make some things difficult.

The launch at the jetties is technically an East side launch, and granted it is a very good launch but not really a good option for me to fish Calcasieu lake. Its just too far of a drive. Its great for fishing the jetties but I seem to catch plenty of fish without driving that far. Lazy I guess.
While we are discussing boat launches, one of the best fishing lakes in our area is Sabine Lake but what are the options to launch there? Burned out bridge( long boat ride), Deep bayou (long car drive), Sabine Pass ( very long car drive).
You can do what the guides do, run down the Intercoastal waterway (very long boat ride).

Mr. Poole is the guy that rides around in the golf cart and collects the launch fee. He will shoot ya straight and tell you they won't be selling shrimp or fuel anytime in the near future. Hey, at least they have port-o-cans now for that early morning Cormies burrito. If you ever get a chance to talk to mr.poole he's a pretty cool cat. Always saved me a parking spot front and center all summer. Wish they could have a store and bait, just not enough profit.

The Cameron Parish Marine Division Sheriff guys are very friendly also.
I can't remember their names though.
They will tow you back to the landing if you have motor trouble, just call 911.
I have good service in the lake with sprint except on Big Pasture road near the Grand Lake water tower I get a dropped call every time.
