Default Diawa Coastal vs. Shimano Curado

Due to a previous thread, I thought I'd do a little research. A question was asked about the Diawa Coastal and its attributes. I stated that I personally liked the Coastal. Quick replies came stating that the coastal was junk with no explanation. Today, since I couldn't get out on the water, I tested the coastal against a curado 200cu for casting distance. Well, the curado with the same rod and weight outcasted the coastal by an average of 14.5 yards making 5 casts with each reel. Based purely on casting distance, I've decided not to buy any more coastals.

I have 2 curados and 2 citica reels. The Citicas for the price are hard reels to beat. Ever tried the Citica reels?

Brew coastal diawas

I have two Coastals and I use them for speck and redfishing plus bass fishing and I find they hold up good and cast excellent. I think they do as good if not better than pfluegers. I can't compare them with shimanos because I don't like spending hundreds of dollars for reels. I can catch just as many fish on the cheaper reels and I find they hold up great. By the way I have been known to fish three to four times a week so this is how I do my product testing.

No better way to test products than on the water. I too thought that the diawa was comparable to the curado until I cast them side by side. Now I know better. Fishing the rigs out of v-bay or pitching a bait to bass or redfish in the marsh don't always require long casts but if you're fishing for skiddish trout in big lake---see big lake posts---the longer you can cast, the more fish you are going to catch. Also, the coastal sells for $130 and the curado for $170. Not a whole lot of difference there especially for someone who can afford to fish 4 times a week.

Are the shimanos made for the saltwater environment like the diawas? That was the main reason I bought them because I get back from fishing and I have a tendency to not hose down my gear like I know I should. Oh by the way i fish three to four times a week because I live 15 minutes from the bay and when the fish are bitting on the inside I can fish 4 times on a hundred dollar bill. One of the many advantages of owning a jon boat.

I wish I lived closer, I'm an hour away no matter which way I go.

I have owned only 2 shimanos so I don't have extensive experience with them but this is what I do know. I have a curado 200cu and a calcutta that are both about five years old. I, like you, am not that routine with cleaning. Sometimes i rinse and oil, sometimes I do not. Probably clean half the time. These two reels still cast like they are brand new and that is fishing strictly in saltwater. I think they are worth an extra fifty but to each his own.
