My dog is a year and a half now. She has been on heartgard since the beginning. I took her for her yearly checkup today, and found out she tested positive for a sign of heartworms. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Aggravating to spend good money on something that doesn't work.

It is very common. HG sucks. I'vehad two dogs on it that tested positive. No problems since I switched to proheart. GL getting your dog treated.

My lab got heart worms twice on heart guard. We were able to go back in our bank statements and prove that we bought it every month and heart guard picked up the bill 100% both times. We switched to the 6 month proheart shot and no problems at all since.

Your problem is very common. So common that there is numerous class action lawsuits against HG around the country. Sorry for your troubles, it happen to me!

My brother-inlaw had this same thing happen to his German Sheppard.
They had their vet call HeartGuard and got them to pay for 100% of the treatment.

My vet said he was gonna research it and contact heartgard. What's the treatments like? I heard a few people say they aren't too pleasant.

Mine got heartworms on heart gaurd! The vet had records that I bought heart guard and never missed, and heart guard payed for the treatments. The treatments were bad because you have to keep the dog locked up for 10 weeks!!

Yea, the treatment is not unlike chemotherapy for cancer treatment.

They inject poison into the dog and it kills the heartworms and makes the dog pretty sick.
You can't let the dog jump around or run because if a dead heart worm comes loose it could get stuck in an artery or somewhere vital.

It's the delivery method not the drug, ivermectin is the active ingredient. I have used it for 14 yrs with success in liquid form. The chews and pills are the weak link in HG, IMO. Have seen them $hit the chews and puke them up. Several I know give proheart and ivermectin monthly. The New cure only sterilizes the adult worms and they die off in 3-6 months, the larva are killed on the first shot. Dogs can test positive up to 24 months after the initial dose. You can still use old kill method of ivermectin and antibiotics but it takes much longer.

Wow! That really sucks!!!! Keeping a young dog full of energy locked up for 10 weeks is gonna be just awesome. With that many cases with just salty Cajun dogs,they shouldn't even be allowed to sell the stuff anymore.

Hope they have deep pockets, they will never recieve more in compensation than what animal cost as initial purchase. There is also an escape clause that no drug is 100% effective.

Proheart and Advantage Multi do not use ivermectin as the active ingredient and they seem to be working best at this time. Heartworms have built up resistance to ivermectin. Those giving it orally are giving higher doses than that used in Heartgaurd. Ivermectin is not labeled for oral use on dogs. It will work in some breeds, but it is known to be toxic to certain breeds such as collies and other herding breeds. So there is a reason your vet is recommending products labeled for heartworm treatment in dogs and not because he is trying to get rich.

My girl is a vet tech for Dupuis in New Iberia and they use proheart for heart worms and never have any issues. Same issue with heart guard they say it's not good to use they see cases all the time where they have heart worms using HG.

what about Trifexis? anybody have any bad experience with that?
