I planted in May of last year in MS, but we wanted to go earlier than that - just couldn't due to wetness. And, the deer killed me last year, almost destroying the whole plot!

We are going bigger this year and hoping we can sacrifice the same for deer having more for doves.

You can't plant enough to fix the deer problem. We planted 4acres and as soon as they grew to the "flavorful" stage, the deer cleaned it out in a matter of days.

I saw that with my own eyes!! I am hoping by planting some of our other food plots it will keep the deer from traveling to our dove field.

Marijuana, best dove attractant out there. Used to find the stuff especially where cows had stomped some down, in field or coral, limits came fast and easy.

So should it be legalized? Or is it worst than alcohol?

Me and Curb Appeal just bought a hydroseeding machine for residential & commercial work, but we are gonna spray the area we dove hunt this year. I talked with the seed rep today about that same thing. He recommended we spray it in mid May to early June, for both sunflower & brown top millet. We are only spraying the millet but we are gonna shoot for the middle of May to spray it.

Better known as Kansas no-high, when I used to live in Phillipsburg, KS, the stuff grew everywhere, the doves craw was full of the stuff. Quail also liked it. Shot several pheasants around the stuff too.

I planted some in pots 3 weeks ago. They were up in 6 days and about 10" tall now.

Hydroseeding is a cheaper alternative to growing grass, but a better alternative than just broadcast spreading seed because the material you spray provides a mini-greenhouse effect to help jump start the germination process. It's also used for erosion control. You've possibly seen it in road construction areas, where it looks like they painted the dirt green.

It cost around 50%-60% less than sod.
