Default Academy Sucks - Handheld GPS Help

Who carries them around laffy aside from academy? Just left there, stood there trying to get them to turn on and hardly any worked - not the ones I was needing for sure.

I truly hate that place.

The Pro Staffers at the reel bar never asked if I could use some help, i was in clear view and even started banging on the damn things like they were Nintendos. Neither did the other 6 employees roaming the sporting goods section. But let me tell you, look at some jigheads or camping matches and the a#* holes won't leave you alone - "Need some help? Finding what you need? Anything in particular you are looking for?". No!!!! And if I needed help, you would just look til you saw the name of what it was because you have no clue what most anything is in this store.

"Uhhhhhh, like, my buddy bought this one and said it was awesome Bro"

Went to pack and paddle after and they had none, but the service was awesome - even put me on the computer to research and gave me a little lesson on them. They don't even carry them and went out if there way.

I am over saving a few bucks, academy can nurse on it.

Sad but true. My dad was completely ignored the same way by some guys at an academy in Houston. Was trying to look at some guns and they wouldn't even acknowledge him.

Went to the bass pro looking at gps/nav systems and they were extremely helpful. Maybe
I just got lucky but the guy working the dept. actually new what the hell he was talking about. Spent about 30 minutes showing me all the features on the model I was looking at and how to use the down imaging. If your in the area its worth stoping by. Im sure Cabelas's would yield the same results.

I think when I bought mine years ago, I bought it through the internet on a site called something like "gpsstore" dot com. The price was better than if I bought it at Academy with my ole lady's discount. I had a similar experience just over a week ago. I asked for help, and the guy basically blew me off. When I walked back to that area a little while later with my ole lady (the meanest manager in the Amb Caf store) the "oh crap" look on his face was priceless. I asked her if she was going to say anything to him & she laughed and said she'd let him worry a little while!!

Academy is a chain store with a bunch of min. wage employees who get paid the same if you buy something or not. If you bring this attitude into Academy your visit will be a lot more enjoyable.

Bass Pro would be my next choice to go LOOK and get info but before buying from any store I would serch the net for pricing.....factoryoutletstore.com is a good site along with many others

we have a place here in Lake Charles called Ship to Shore that sells hand held units and teaches classes on how to use them if you head this way

Bass pro def has more knowledgeable people. Bought a fly rod and the guy brought me outside to the pond to let me try it out and help me out a little before paying for it. Talked with a couple boat salesmen for a good while and they knew their stuff also. We need one closer to Lake Charles but it would kill a lot of stores around here with better prices and wider selection.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Even though this is a chain and it's lower wage employees, that's still not a legitimate reason. I worked minimum wage at a retail store (Oreilley's, now thats a tough customer base) and never, not once treated my job any different than I do now - I did my job at 100% and always went out of my way to do what I was getting paid for, which was to help customers and sell the products on the shelf. They go hand in hand.

Most of these cats are going to school, and you've all worked with them at some point... That degree is going to take them to the top, not work. Then they hit the work force and suck *** and job hop because they feel they are too good to actually have to bust ***. Nothing against school, just the mentality that has been created to coerce kids into going.
