Default BL report thursday 10/6/16 welcoming advice

Launched calc point and fished Turner's area near channel.
Some small trout on deeper reefs early, one red. Shrimp and lil jons.
Moved around a little but mostly fished that area. Never did get on good bite.
Tried moving water by rocks in channel below texaco cut, lots of shrimp and shrimp boats, but only one red.

Water was fairly stained with the wind, not much tidal movement, lots of shrimp in the area. Only kept a couple as i never really found them.
Calc pt lady gave me some croakers but nothing would eat them (probably because of all the shrimp around).
Still struggling with why ill catch one trout then nothing else in the area.
Never did cross the lake to the E side with the E/NE winds, maybe i should have. Fish did not seem to be near channel where i was mostly fishing.
I try to share what i find (no matter how bad it makes me look!) in the hopes of some better fishermen chiming in to help me learn. Not looking for spots, just hoping to actually learn something from what i find, and what to do again or not do again.
Thanks guys.

I struggle with the same thing. I have a lot of spots and most of them usually catch fish but to this day after fishing big lake for 2 years on my own and with 4 different guide trips this year I still have yet to catch a limit of anything. I have good trips but still not the big one I am looking for

Big lake can humble you. I feel lucky every time I catch a limit. No lie. What helped me was no short cut. Two years of guide trips and tons of hours on the lake. Always forcing myself to try something new and different. Once I find fish in a spot, I beat it to death. There is a reason why they are there and I try to understand why. If you can enjoy the process, you've already won. Good luck. Stay at it.

Many thanks.
I lack the funds to do many guided trips, but the few ive taken have been a huge help in learning as most were eager to help me understand why fish go where they go and what they are doing.

Took me awhile to realize this, but i am not a pro and cant expect to catch a box full of fish every trip. Im enjoying the learning process, and appreciate the help.

You mentioned alot of shrimp. If you keep seeing shrimp popping, strong probability you are on the fish. As said before, the calcasieu estuary is a very humbling place. Try changing your presentation. Try using 1/8oz leadheads instead of quarters. Also popping corks work well this time of year.
