Get disk brakes with stainless steel calipers on one axle. There is no real need for brakes on 2 axles on a bay boat

I just replace my 12 y/o Kodiac disc brakes with same brand but with Dacroment coating. Much cheaper than stainless and excellent saltwater protection.

Do you guys have surge brakes with a solenoid bypass?
Does anyone run electric over hydraulics or straight electric brakes? |

From someone who's has pulled mini floats a long time.
Electric Brakes are always giving me problems. Electric/hydro have been more reliable. No need for trailer brakes on a bay boat imo if it's a big heavy 24' plus it couldn't hurt |

Trailer brakes help you stop faster if you think you need them or not. A lot of guys are pulling boats bigger than they should with short frame vehicle and without a brake controller on CRAPPY trailers. That goes for just about any trailer out there. I am looking, I have a brake controller and plan on getting a dual axle trailer with brakes on one axle for a 21' bay boat.

My last trailer boat was 29' at about 8000-9000# ready to fish. Had surge brakes and they worked very well. I pulled with an F250 then F150 and no problems braking with either vehicle. Current boat is a 24" Bluewave PB...no clue on the wet weight...also stops very well with surge brakes behind an F150. I would not complicate my life with electric or elec/hydraulic on a trailer that I will back into salt water. The cons with surge brakes, at least for me, is the knocking on acceleration as the telescoping section extends to the stop....makes me think the ball is loose. I have used electric/hydraulic on a much larger race car hauler (triple axle with brakes on 2 axles) that was 20,000#+ loaded and my bus felt like it stopped quicker with the hauler attached but probably not actually factual. Needless to say I was impressed with that set-up but it would be overkill/unnecessary expense/increased maintenance over surge brakes IMO.

I find this set-up last the best when dunking your trailer in salt water. However, I changed the drum brakes to disc surge w/ solenoid as meaux fishin suggest.

Does anyone know if you can add brakes to a single axel trailer that doesn't have brakes?

Trailer brakes

There are very few boat trailers out there available with electric over hydraulic brakes. I heard magic tilt is making a trailer with these, but it is easy to install surge brakes on your current trailer. All parts are available from Tie Down Engineering. Are there any stores that carry Kodiac brakes in south Louisiana?

Trailer brakes
I just ordered my brake parts online. Got Kodiak slip ons with a tie down model 660 actuator, and tie downs brake line kit for single axels.
I went with the slip ons because I already have vortex hubs, and I didn't want to down grade those. |

I am pretty sure champion trailer in Slidell carries them, but I couldn't pass up the price I found, and I didn't have to pay tax, and free shipping. |

Yes you can. If you axles already have the bracket from mounting it will be much easier. If not you can buy the brackets and have them welded on. The bracket I am talking about is a square plate with 4 holes that is welded to the end of the axle tube.

Got everything in today, and finished the installation in about 3 1/2 hours. Really easy job. Just took my time doing everything.
