Carry plenty of bait for chum

Use small (40# or less if you can) Flourocarbon leader and hide your hook completely in your bait.

Try to keep a baited line in the chum at all times. The more they get fired up, the less leader shy they will be.

i was using a 25# fluorocarbon leader this past weekend and they kept biting straight through it....so i tried no leader with straight 50# power pro and they still bit through it. talk about frustrating! im def gonna try at least 40# fc leader next trip.

Are they biting through it or are they getting you cut off in the rig?

The best method I've found is to put your thumb on the spool, walk them to the back of the boat, and then reel them in. If you can survive a mangrove's first hard run into the rig, you've got him licked.

well the first couple i was able to get them away from the rig and they bit through my line but a couple def got hung up on the rig as i was not able to make it to the back off the boat i think im gonna try heavier line....like maybe 60# or maybe even 80#. not sure what line to use if i go that heavy though

Once you get them to come up and eat, throw your chum farther and farther away from the rig. They will follow it out to a certain point. The more distance you give yourself from the rig legs, the better. If you can get them 15-20ft off the rig, it's a heck of a lot easier to catch them.

At 60 and 80#, the bigger fish will get leader shy (especially in clean water). When you get the fish away from the rig, it's not necessary.

Was there a hard tug when you got cut off outside the rig?
