Trailer title question

I bought a boat with trailer a few years back with no title on either one. Bill of sale on the boat is the only paperwork I have on the boat. I lost my license plate for the trailer on the road. How would I go about getting a new license plate for the trailer without a Bill of sale on the trailer? Anyone have any experience with this?

the boat registration is your title for the boat

for the trailer, you are SOL so buy an old rusted junk trailer and use that title for yours then scrap the rusty trailer or sell it/use it for parts

How big a boat trailer you talking about?

You may be better off buying a new trailer or a used one with a title.

If you lost your license plate on the road then it has been titled in your name. If you lost the license plate that came with the trailer then you are SOL. Best bet is to just take a license plate off another trailer and swap them.

Or you can grind off the VIN # on the trailer and call LSP (louisiana state police) and have a trooper come out and re-stamp the trailer and you tell him its home made and you give the trooper $10 and he gives you a piece of paper and you bring that piece of paper to DMV and DMV gives you a registration and license plate.

buy a 250 dollar trailer from harbor freight... use that license plate and registration . done.

really ?? It was this easy 2 years ago when I had mine stamped. Thats crazy. What if it was built with "used parts from a scrap iron pile" ?

2 years ago I built my trailer and that was a requirement. Did they check my receipts? No. Was it a requirement? Yes. I had every receipt from the build including from scrap yard. When I brought it to LSP in lake Charles they looked over the trailer and stamped it.

Go to a private DMV. I see you're in Lafayette. There is one over on Arnould Blvd by Jason's Deli. They'll charge you about $100 in service fees, but they can fix just about any title issue in the process.

you just show the receipt for the used parts you bought from the scrap yard to Frankenstein one

its just about showing you put one together and didn't steal one whole


as to being stopped on the road and having no serial number plate on it or a stamped number on the frame, that's easy to get around by just saying you replaced the tongue when the old one (pick an excuse) was messed up.,

the inspection go pretty easy because they kinda look at it like you wouldn't be dumb enough to call them for an inspection if you were doing anything shady but if you act all nervous and fidgity (sending off red flags) then they might give you a hard time
