Default Opinions on new Merc 25 4-stroke

My dad has got the fever for a new aluminum boat & 25hp. I think he's about to drop a deposit down on a new 16x48 Southfork & a new 25hp 4-stroke Mercury. Does anone have any knowledge of these motors or boats?

Thanks,
Brad

Tohatsu builds all Mercs 30hp and under. They also build all Nissans. All 4 stroke 25hp motors are anemic compared to the 2 stroke. The king of the NEW 25's right now is the E-Tec. It is a 35 cubic inch, 2 cylinder, DFI, torque monster. Will pull 2 4 stroke 25's backwards, carry double the load and run with them, burn close to the same amount of gas.

I have a 2011 Merc 25 HP 4 stroke with electric start. I love it. Reliable, sips gas, quiet, starts quickly. It pulls my 15' 52" john boat with 1 person about 27-28 mph. I use it 4 times for every 1 time I use my bay boat.

Like he said, Tohatsu makes small Mercs. So why pay extra for a mercury sticker on your motor. New two strokes are almost as quiet as 4 strokes and get the same gas mileage with less weight and more torque. You could probably same close 1k with a 2 stroke tohatsu vs a 4 stroke Mercury.

Can't get 2 stroke tohatsu in a 25 anymore. They only make 40-115 in a 2 stroke. Evinrude is the only company still making a 25 two stroke.

Until you drive it compared to any 4 stroke 25, it's hard to compare. I have never been an OMC fan, of any size outboard. OMC was the Johnson and Evinrude lines, then Bombardier (BRP) bought all of OMC's lines. I have driven both, the 4 stroke 25's and the E-Tec, not in the same league. And I am a huge fan of some 4 strokes. I run a 4 cylinder 40hp Merc 4 stroke with a 60hp ecu in it. I absolutely love it. I wouldn't trade it for any half dozen 2 stroke 40's., 50's or 60's.
When it comes to outboards, there is no manufacturer that builds the best of all sizes. The 25 E-Tec is a beast, the 40 E-Tec,,,not so much.

I have the 4 stroke tohatsu 25 on my 1548 alweld and I love it it's not as fast as the 2 strokes obviously but it's extremely quiet and I barely use fuel

Well he ordered his Southfork and 25 Mercury 4-Stroke. We shall see how it does when they are finished with it.

Thanks for the help and information!
