Hog Weights
Several guys judged him at 350-375#'s with some saying he was 400. Two seperate scales put him at exactly 310lbs. Pictures do not do justice to this beast!!! |

How do those big suckers taste? I've only ever taken the 80 - 150 pounders and they all were pretty tender. I would imagine those big ones would be tuff.

I killed one about the same size on thanksgiving day. I won't clean one that big. But I was always told that if they dot smell too bad and you cut the nuts and throat right away the meat will be okay. But I'm not risking it.

That's a big old boy right there.
When a fella I use to hunt with would kill one like that he would take out his pocket knife and cut a chunk of meat out the hind quarter, bring it back to the camp and pan fry it in a skillet. If it tasted okay he would clean it, if it didn't it would be coyote feed. |

I think the key is making sure they drop at the first shot and don't have a chance to get their glands dumping stuff into their bloodstream. Makes for that nasty boar smell. Also just being a boar, they get "boar taint" from swallowing their own frothy saliva that has lots of hormones in it. |

cutting the throat is to bleed the hog out, you do this on all of them male or female cutting the nuts is pointless on a dead hog, unless you are looking for something to play with |

not getting after you Aubrey, i know you said that is what you have been told, i am just saying cutting the nuts only works if the hog is cut young and raised that way, i kills the testosterone that causes the smell, we have killed several boars that went over the 250lb mark and we have only left one 200lb boar in the woods cause he stunk so bad and i didn't want that smell in my boat, and had a sow that tasted bad cause we must have missed a gland when cleaning the thing |

Unless the heart is pumping, it use useless to cut anything on a hog (nuts, heart, throat, toenails). Old wise tail as far as I'm concerned. When we catch hogs with dogs or in a trap, I prefer to bleed them, and really from what I can tell it only makes the cleaning process neater. When we kill large boars of dominance such as this, we smell them. If they are not rank in odor, we clean them. This particular pig was not, and the meat smelt just like any other one. Of course, this is not peak breeding season for them. I have also hooked a rope to one about this size in the past to drag off with a 4 wheeler and had to throw away the leather glove I was wearing. My whole truck smelled like a bad gym bag for a week after I left it in there over night.
As long as you take your time and clean it well, and no rank/rancid smell is present - it should be a good eater pig. I always look for those little brown glands in the quaters and make sure I cut those out. |

Speaking of hogs. I just saw the biggest one I have ever seen. In fact, I not positive that it wasn't a black bear. Couldn't get the gun up fast enough to shoot him though. Here's hoping he comes get him some rice bran.
