Beach report: sea weed has subsided
We caught a small (~3 ft) bull shark too, which contributed to our reluctance to wade. |

Awesome news. Here's my latest in a litany of simple questions. How far out do you have to go to cast between the first and second bar? I've waded out to chest deep water, and didn't feel it getting shallower and said "enough of this. I like my limbs too much". Let's use the closer jetties west of Holly Beach. Roughly how close would you have to wade to those to be able to cast a 6000 series reel with a 2-3 oz. weight and a couple chunks of mullet on to get between that first and second cut? I'll be on the beach Sunday and Monday. It's mainly a relax with the wife trip, but I'll most certainly be doing some fishing.

Average, you probably were wading during extremely high tide, whereas on a normal tide ur bars would be much shallower and noticible

If your casting distance is more limited or you prefer not to wade, I recommend Rutherford beach. The water gets deep fast enough that often you cannot even tell where the sandbar is and casting past it is not important. In still air or with a tail wind, we can cast about 100 yards using 12' Ugly Stiks and the "pendulum" casting technique shown in YouTube videos. Crab catches a lot of air and a 12-15 mph S wind really reduces casting distances. I think we'll have some drop leaders and mullet available next time we have a stiff S wind, or just fish Rutherford. We usually use Carolina rigs and crabs. I'm sure some folks make bull reds work at the jetties W of Holly Beach, but it always seemed a bit shallow for our techniques. |

Glad to hear the seaweed is going away. That stuff makes for some tough fishing. All of the crushed shell it has in it sure is hard on your line.
Cant wait to get back down there and hit the sand. |

I'll be right on Holly Beach. I'm using 8.5 and 9 foot rods, and I'll probably walk out 40-50 yards to try and hit that second cut. Last year I had a day where I was hooking up with bulls casting that rig from the sand. I'll be fishing mullet, or whatever the cast net brings in on the beach! Thanks for the helpful information!

I fished Holly today and the seaweed was horrible. Waded out chest deep. Once the catfish stopped biting (only thing we got) I started throwing artificial. Couldn't even work lures without getting them covered in weed. Saw a shark about 20 yards away, decided it was time to go home.

My big adventure to Florida last month got rained out and we wound up in Biloxi.
A Hawaiian dude had an mullet air cannon that he said could cast 300 yds. He let me try it and I shot an onion almost out of sight. Pretty cool setup. |
