Thumbs up Fishing Terms

Potlicker:
One who crowds out someone else's fishing spot...

as pertaining to fisherman:

the first examples of the term being used to describe other fisherman was in the early 1930's in the diary's of pissed off fisherman.

def. - A potlicker in fishing is a man who is too lazy to go find fish on his own, so he looks for someone who is already on fish and then he moves into that man's spot. He potlicks, he's a lazy bastard who depends on what others find or leave him

Pilgrim :
An idiot who looks like they just got off the boat and haven't a clue as to where they are.

Farmed:
You lost a fish everyone else in the boat thinks they could have landed

Gear guy:
the unclean fisherman using a method that employs spinners/weights/flashers/divers/swivels/kitchen sink/bait/ect.
The next big thing in fishing and he has all of the next big things in his tackle box. "yes that guy"

HOOKSET:
Pulling back sharply on rod to implant hook into fish or fishing partner.

Skunked:
That's when you spend all day fishing and you don't so much as get a nibble on your line.

"Drive By" :
Fish that hit the lure / bait but didn't stick. Typically someone who had an unsuccessful day on the water and justifies their fishing prowess by telling the guys back at work, "we had a couple of drive by's but no hook ups".

Chasing rainbows:
The act of following someone's hot tip about where the fishing is unbelievably great only to find out you shoulda' been there yesterday. (this was created by Hurtem Hatten)

Dink:
Undersized fish.

GI JOE:
The guy who comes down the bank with all the gear he owns because he just bought it all an hour ago, still in the plastic GI JOE bag and yellow Eagle claw rod n reel combo with price tag on the eyelet.

Net Foul:
The act of losing a fish at the net, usually by trying to "swoop" the fish by bringing the net up from the tail instead of "head in". Sometimes caused by hooking gear in the net during periods of excited flailing, resulting in the fish throwing the hook.

"Zipperlip":
is when someone isnt specific about where they caught fish or how they caught them.

"Aluminum hatch" :
Lots of boats chasing birds in Turners

"Clamming" :
Jet boat stuck on old jetties or shallow flat.

LINE NIPPERS:
Teeth.

"Hawg Line":
A Place where you line up to watch others catch fish.

Catching Salad:
bringing in a bunch of plantlife on your hooks

Sky rat:
a seagull

T2 (T square):
T-Top look out

RUDY - (term used for hunters and fisherman) noun; person that has all the 'in' things for apparel and gear. Person with stickers on gun/boat/truck of apparel he/she does not own. This person will never be seen in clothing that does not match.
Examples:
1. Columbia shirt, shorts, Sperry topsider shoes, Costas with that wire thing, visor with name of some place or product one has never been or doesn't own.
2. Anyone with a Yeti (or other name brand) hat or sticker that does not own such product.

Fisherman- A guy that bust his @$$ all week at work and when he finally gets some free time and spare income, tries his luck. Most of the time the "fisherman" ends up scratching out but has a good time on the water.

Jellyfish, jellyfisher, jellyfisherman- A person who is "jealous" of another man's catch, gear, size and number of fish, the ability to consistently catch fish. Crowds someone who is on fish because they are jealous they have fished all day for a couple drive-bys.

1. That dude is such a Jellyfish, he was jealous he was fishing all day with no bites and I fished an hour and had a 3 man limit.
2. Bruh! That potlickin' pilgrim of a Jellyfisher used his binoculars to see me catching from across the lake dood! He jealous and mad, cause when him and his boat of Jellyfish came and anchor tossed, they were throwing skrimps and caught nothing while I stayed waxing them with my sparkle beetle and clip on cork bruh! 50 to one catch rate bruh. They jelly and they mad.

This is spot on!!!
There are a lot of guys on here that are not the type of fisherman that you just described.
Guys that go out on the water and stay stressed out the whole day bc someone go too close to them while fishing.

We are so blessed to have such beautiful places to fish and the means to get out on the water. We see and experience things weekly that some people live their entire lives never seeing.

It is sad to me that some people take this for granted and spend all of their time on the water rediculing and argueing with others that don't have as much experience as them.

I would rather spend a day on the water with my Dad not getting one bite than fishing with someone like this and catching a limit of 6 lbers.

Spot check - the act or re wiping on the water because you either forgot to wipe or didn't put enough effort into the initial wipe at the marina, usually cause by sheer excitement to Br going fishing you just can't waste and more time on the can u say screw it !
