Default Vacuum sealer?

Do yall freeze your fish in bags of water or use a vacuum sealer? I'm thinking about getting a sealer because all the bags of water are taking up too much room in my freezer. So...the question is, are they worth the $, and if so, which is a good one to buy?

Man, honestly the ziplock hand pump with the ziplock bags works awesome!!! But the real ones work well too. I have the food saver that my parents gave me and I bought the ziplock one. I like the ziplock better...and the bags are re-usable.

Vacuum sealer is definitely the way to go. I have a Food Saver brand and I love it. Vacuum seal all my fish, deer, ducks and whatever else. I fix a little pile of fillets on wax paper and put it in the freezer so it can firm up and glaze over. I then cut the size bag needed, mark the bag with a sharpie identifying contents and date and seal it up. By pre-freezing you eliminate the moisture that can interfere with the vacuum suction and seal process.

Great Idea! I'll have to try that. I recently got the Game Saver by Food Saver and like it. It's taken a little trial and error to figure out how to get all the air out. Putting less filets in the bag seems to work better. IMO they surely taste more fresh than fish frozen in water.

Great idea about freezing first. I think I'm going to try the vacuum process because the frozen water method is taking up too much room for me too.

That's a good idea with the fish. I find ducks will burn on the inside if you don't use them Before the next season. I leave them in the packaging they come from the cleaner. She Wraps them in Saran Wrap then freezer paper. When I get them home I vacuum seal them in packs of 2.

I've always been completely satisfied with zip lock. But we were recently given a Food Saver that we're beginning to experiment with. Lost a nice fillet in the Food Saver earlier this week, not sure why. But we hardly ever lose fish with the zip lock technique. Zip lock is heavier (due to the water), but also travels really well. I'm cleaning most of our fish these days in Calcasieu, Grand Isle, or Leeville, and I have enough stuff to drag around and remember, I don't need to worry about the Food Saver and the bags too.

If I'm only gonna be gone for a day or two I just put the fillets in a gallon bag bring them home and vacuum seal em. If I'm gone for more than a weekend I bring the machine with me

I have the Cabelas commercial sealer. Best investment ever. Love it. I burnt up 3 cheaper sealers before buying this one. It is awesome. No over heating and a true 1/4" seal. I buy my bags from restaurant supply offline for way cheaper. Bulk bags is way to go!! Do lots of sausage and fish every year.

I'm like fishmaster, I use the ziplock hand pump sealer now. It is super efficient and cheap. Formerly I used the ziploc battery powered sealer, but that thing ate waaayyy to many double AA batteries.

I have a friend that has a $200 jig and she says it gets hot real quick and takes a while to seal. The advantage to this one is that you can seal anything in any size you want. The bags come in a roll and you are only limited in width I think.

The ziploc vacuum seal bags only come in quart and gallon sized bags.

Compared to freezing in water vacuum seal take much less room and thaws super quick. Its a no brainer to switch over. Your doing the right thing.

I don't usually freeze any of my fish. We eat all we can, and give the rest away. Gives me a good excuse to hafta go back and catch some more.
