Gulf disturbance

Surface observations indicate that an area of low pressure could be
forming between the northeastern tip of honduras and the cayman islands where the shower activity has become concentrated during the past several hours. Upper-level winds are favorable for additional development of this disturbance over the next couple of days...as it moves northwestward at 10 to 15 mph toward the yucatan peninsula and southern gulf of mexico. This system has a medium chance...50 percent...of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours...and a high chance...60 percent...of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 5 days. Interests in the yucatan peninsula and the southern gulf of mexico should monitor the progress of this disturbance. |

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: NONE All, With the current activity in the Caribbean and Atlantic, I would like to schedule a call for Friday, 16 Aug at 0930 CST. It appears at this time that the tropical wave in the Caribbean will enter the Gulf later this week or over the weekend. I will ask the NWS(Mobile) to provide the latest info on these storms during the call. The call in number is 1-800-977-8002, code 833550#. Note that you have to use the # key on the code. Hopefully we will keep the call brief, but informative. Be safe and look forward to communicating with you all, Duane "Bubba" Poiroux USACE - Mobile District 251-694-3720 |

This system has grabbed my attention. Still a million "ifs" with it, including if it will even develop, though that is looking more likely. I am a degreed meteorologist, who gave up the trade for self employment, but its still a way of life for me to follow this stuff. I can tell you this with certainty, those model tracks will flop around like boiling spaghetti noodles until we have a clear center develop. I think that could happen inside 24 hours, with a possible land impact somewhere..... Anywhere along the gulf coast possible in about 4-5 days.
