Prop questions

Hey guys I have a custom made 16x48 flat with a 3 cylinder 40 merc. I'm looking to up grade my prop. Top speed is 35 with just me. It's a lil sluggish out the hole with a load till the power band kicks in. I'm def putting a jack plate soon. But I'm also looking to phrase the prop and put a whale tail. What's y'all experience with 3 and four blade props? We run quite a bit of shallow water I hear the 4 blades are better for that. Help me out! Upgrade the prop not phase lol

Generally 4 blade props give you a better hole shot and more stern lift which helps you get up in shallow water but they will cut a little off your top end.

If its propped right you wont need a whale tail. Call the prop shop in Lafayette and talk to em about it. I have gotten a prop repitched for about $100 before over there

Never had a whale tail on any of my boats. If it's set up right you shouldn't need that bandaid..

Thanks guys I looked it over. I have a a three blade power tech on there now. I have been reading and found they are good shallow water props. I have jackplate on order. Once I get it on I will get somebody qualified to help me set it and possibly adjust the pitch.

That power tech will never perform like the Yamaha prop.

I agree, scrap prices are a little higher over in my area. I can give you $1,700. PM me if interested.

Seriously, after you get your motor set you going to need a tachometer and take a few readings down to know what the best would be for you.

And that Yamaha from what I hear is a lighter gauge steal. They'll spin faster but don't hold up as well.

From what I hear, that is correct. The powertech scb3 is a fast prop and has good stern lift. Ran one on my previous setup and was really happy with it.

Ask CajunChristian if he's ever had a problem with a Yamaha prop not holding up. I'm just trying to help you. I have a powertech prop that I can't get rid of. It's brand new and is a heavy hunk of junk.

Thanks, I'll check into them some more. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on. I'm trying to make this thing run as shallow as possible. With out having to do any major modifications like building a tunnel.

That thing have a tunnel? If not it looks like your motor could be mounted too high, cavitation plate should be even with the transom

Nope, It might be a lil high now. I have the jack plate on the way though. Once I get it backs off the transom some they say that wont be a problem

Not at all, rule of thumb is every 1" you go back, you can go up 1/2". So on a 6" jack plate you're cavitation plate can be 3" above the bottom of you're transom. Of course this is just a rule of thumb, everybody runs there's different depending on their hull, you can make adjustment on you're jack plate till you find you're sweet spot.
