that model starter is easy to rebuild...alot of times the brushes dont make good enough contact to spin the starter gear up to the flywheel..if the starter gear is spinning but not engaging to the flywheel the brushes just may need to be cleaned. And check all of your connections too. I would have a local starter/altenator shop take a look at the starter before buying a new one.

I would be lying on battery being fully charge now it was cranking but when I got it home to run it ittried rolling over but eventually selenoid just kept on clicking. I went ahead and ordered a new selenoid since there 35 bucks but my worry is will a engine shop carry those type of orders on hand are will they have to order it I am going to buy a new battery for it to. Plus it looks like from the ignition to battery might need to wire.

i have a 96 johnson and its doing the same thing. i was told get the starter checked.

I also had this motor, one thing about it is that it would have to be almost perfectly level across the top in order to start. It was a little rough to get going after that it ran ran fine. Is it the SPL model?
