Wait flats fishing, as in a fly rod? Or are you talking about fishing in the passes?

Just a fair warning to not get your hopes up too high (hate to be Debbie Downer), but you will be basically tied up tightlining with a bunch of other boats. Kinda like fishing the weirs. (You can see that in the pics above) Went and did a night trip in Islamorada (Bud n Marys marina) and the tarpon guides get the scraps from the offshore boats and go out about 300 yards from the marina and dump them in same spot everyday to attract them. Then you go sit and tightline for them. It was fun dont get me wrong, but it wasnt what I expected I guess. The bait was dolphin bellies and we literally motored 300 yards from the marina.

We did that one night and then the next day drove down a few miles and there is a dock where you can buy cigar minnows and handfeed 100+ lb tarpon

Came across a few web sites for Tarpon fishing on the flats/back country and its something I want to do "flat/ back country tarpon fishing"

as for it being a rip off, well not much of a choice when I arrive on a cruise ship, and leave the same day. I can go fishing, or go with the herds and view stupid s h i t

From friends who have done it, back country light tackle/fly fishing seems to be a absolute treat and a major change from what we are used to. I don't really know who they fished with but they seemed to catch a lot of reds when they went, i wanna say they went with someone from bud n marys but i could be wrong…give Captain Nick Stanzyk a call im sure he could point you in the right direction. He does the offshore thing but his parents own bud n marys in islanmorda
