Default Need to go try out the new fly rod

I got a new fly rod today for my birthday and I am chomping at the bit to try it out. I want to make a trip tomorrow to Hopedale but I can't find anybody to go with. Anybody in Baton Rouge want to make a trip? The skiff is small but she catches fish.

Man I sure wish I could join you but I got my yard pass Friday and went to P Train and scratched. It was my first time to fish it. No tide, cold as hell, and my trolling motor crapped out on me. Good luck and happy B Day.

i am going to go to "Da Pen" since i am going to make the trip alone. I have gone out of Da Pen and tried to fish some of the marsh outside of it but it is full of grass just under the surface of the water. Does anyone know of some other marsh outside of Da Pen that may have some better fishability? I was looking at the map and it looks like I can go out under Hwy 47 and get into some other marsh. Any advice for me would be great. I want to get a chance at some reds with the fly rod but I don't want to go too far from home or out too far in the marsh by myself.

Man I would have been down for sure this morning, but I have to study for finals tomorrow. I went to the spillway this morning to chase bass, but spun a bushing a few miles from the launch Needless to say our 12 mile run was shortened a bit and we got skunked

Default Fly fishing

It's allways fun to fish w/ others but fly fishing is easier Bayou Self.
I have allways found that a plastic wash tub at my feet to strip the line into keeps the line from getting tangled in stuff in the boat.
When a 30 " red hits that fly you don't want your line tangled around anything!

Went to Da Pen today. Caught two on the fly rod with a chartreuse and white clouser's minnow. Caught another 30 on a chartreuse DOA. Also caught about a 40 to 50 lb black drum on the same DOA. I took a picture with my phone but I am having trouble getting it to the computer. If I can get them on there I will download then to this thread. It was pretty funny when I hooked that big sucker. Everyone in a 300 mile radius came to see what I had. I fought it for at least 10 minutes and landed it by hand. It was about 40" long and about 18" tall. A nice little volkswagon.

i have been fly fishing since I was your age and I will be 30 next week. I too enjoy the roll cast. In fact I was doing it today when people where encroaching on my space. I didn't want to hook them in the face although they deserved it.

Eek Wild cast

LMAO, When someone has to stick their nose up my butt when i'm fly casting that's when my elbow starts getting a little loose and my wrist starts to break and my back cast get WAY wild.
that weighted clouser whistles when it goes by someones ear.

i will have to try that sometime. I was simply amazed today at the potlicking I experienced. I was off by myself when I started hooking a few fish. This guy started making his way towards and didn't stop till he was about 20 yards away. I kept catching fish while he caught nothing. After I caught the monster drum and another dozen trout to his none he had the nerve to ask me what I was using. I felt like I was in Turner's Bay.
