POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Pineywoods Forest Technician will assist with a broad range of activities associated with restoration of longleaf pine ecosystems in southwest and central Louisiana. Activities may include assisting with field implementation of restoration activities, on-site coordination and monitoring of silvicultural and inventory contractors, support for longleaf pine outreach activities and events, timber cruising, field data collection and analysis, geographic information system (GIS) mapping, prescribed burning, invasive species control, and general land stewardship tasks. The preferred location for this position will be Lake Charles, Louisiana.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

[SIZE=3]The Pineywoods Forest Technician participates in preserve operations and outreach activities including the maintenance, management and development and coordination of conservation programs. This may include one or more of the following functions:[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]Coordinates and monitors land management contractors[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]Furthers the Conservancy’s strategic goals[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]Assists with landowner outreach activities[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]Implements preserve management plans[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]Removes exotic species and/or monitors & researches species [/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]Maintains tools and equipment[/SIZE]

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

[SIZE=3]·[/SIZE] [SIZE=3]BA/BS/AS/Technical (BS in Forestry or Natural Resources Management with Forestry emphasis preferred) or vocational degree in science-related field and one to two years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. · Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
· Knowledge of ecological land management principles
· Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation

· Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
· Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment
· Perform under minimal and frequently distant supervision, consulting with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of general preserve management realm.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
· Supervise administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
· May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area
· Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and meeting fundraising targets.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
· Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy efforts
· Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
· Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff and others, providing and obtaining needed information
· Interacts with preserve visitors, conveys basic preserve information and leads field trips

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Conservation Practitioner III may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
· require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
· present frequent possibility of injury
· require long hours in isolated settings
