Headknocker Generator HELP!

My brother-in-law was trying to start his old generator and found that it had problems. So he called me that has little small engine mechanical experience to try and fix it. So I found that the cylinder head appeared cracked and was wondering how much a new one might cost. The company of the generator has a non working website and all the small engine shops are closed till monday, so I figured that good ole' saltycajun's could help. He is already looking at new one's and another question is does anyone own or know anything about propane run generators (or propane and Gasoline)...are they good, bad or dependable, worth it or not??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Default Generators

FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK THIS. Today I took out my natural gas powered generator and it started up on the 2nd crank, it has been laid up since Gustav, so I would say yes they are very dependable. I bought mine at propanegenerators.com I think. My next project for it is to run it off a propane bottle.

I'm gonna agree with SS here I would go with propane if possible. both propane and gas have thier pros and cons. I have a 1960? ford propane tractor that sits for 6 month and will fire right up and a gas Onan genset that MUST be ran every month or the gas turns to crap. tried all the additives and it still hard to start.

The downside to propane is the ease of getting fuel. I have a 250 gallon tank at my house and it has a dip tube installed that I can fill my tractor up with, but if you dont have a tank fuel could be an issue. I'm thinking that a propane genset is in the near future for me. SK

Propane and Butane have a lot less of the killer Carbon Monoxide.
