Default Florida Keys

Looking to make a getaway soon to the Keys with the wife. When is the best time to go in y'all opinion. Looking to catch snook, tarpon, permit, etc. Recommendations on a place to stay as well as charter?

It has been 10 years since I have been there so can't give any up to date info. Nick's brother DJ was down there on a job and went on a charter with a couple of other guys that work for me. Can call him and ask about the charter they went on. I know they caught some tarpon.

Can you throw a fly? Also I would avoid Key West, its fun but much more expensive than middle keys.

Bud n Mary's out of islamorada. Went tarpon fishing several years back there. Did an offshore trip lotsa dolphin. Sailfish is real good in fall and winter.

You can hand feed tarpon down the road towards key west.

If you are a homophobe don't go to key west

I'm not that great with a fly. Only tried it a handful of times.

Our anniversary is February 4th. Would have like to gone then but I figured the fishing wouldn't be great around that time. So starting to look more into late spring or something. Just always wanted to go to the Keys.

Late april-june are the best tarpon months for middle keys (islamorada). You can catch em earlier in key west, but it's not optimal. If water temp gets too cold, they won't eat.

This is a good reason to buy a fly outfit and start practicing now.

The best head boat I've ever been on by far. Located in Key Largo. You can bring your own tackle, or they will provide it.

Capt Scott was very nice. We used him 3 weeks ago. He will trailer to wherever the fishing is the best. He def knows where the Tarpon are. Spinning and Fly fishing.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Looks like we're going to head to Islamorada beginning of June. Still looking at possible charters for the area. Can't wait!

We had a good time tarpon fishing but it was a little different than what I was expecting. The tarpon guides would get the scraps from the cleaning tables and take them to a spot and dump them in same spot every day We did a night trip and jumped in the skiff and motored about 400 yds from he marina and guide dumped a bucket of fish scraps and we anchored down and used pieces of dolphin bellies for bait. Sit there and wait. Caught some huge sharks and jumped one tarpon. Guide may have used a tablespoon of fuel on the trip. I kinda had it in my mind we would be in the backcountry fishing in he middle of nowhere but anyways that's on me.

The next day went down the road and you can hand feed 100 lb plus tarpon from a pier

May also want to check into scuba diving for lobster. They do trips for that outta key west.

Yeh. I'm definitely going to try and lobster dive. I don't have to catch a tarpon. You are right. That doesn't sound like much of an "adventure" for tarpon. Most interested in snook, permit, or bonefish.

Still haven't booked anything yet, so staying in Key West is still an option.
