Default Braided Dacron vs Mono

I need to change some old line soon and I am debating Dacron vs Mono. I can add about a hundred yards more dacron than mono but other than that what are the pro's an cons.

Then again, do you have enough drag to need that line?
You may just tear up the reel and loose he fish anyway???

Kinda depends on what your fishing for and style of fishing. Trolling, bottom fishing, drift lining????????

At 38+ dollars per spool(500yrds) it needs to support drift, jig, and troll. I think I am going to go with Dacron and put a mono clear 80 lb 15 ft leader then 5-8 ft 50 lb leader to bait for jig and cut back to the 80 for troll.

I'm in the process of changing out line on all my offshore reels as well. Have you considered using one of the newer braids like Power Pro or Calcutta? You can put a lot backing on the spool with those rather than with dacron. The rest of your setup will vary with what you're fishing for.

Here's how I have things set up.

Trolling - 80lb Power Pro backing, 150 yds of 80lb mono.

Bottom Fishing - 80lb Power Pro tied directly to the swivel.

Drift/Chunk - 80lb Power Pro backing, 150 yds of 80lb mono then 25 yds of 50-80lb flurocarbon.

I thought about the super braids, but have heard horrer stories of it binding up after a heavy fight. That's the only thing keeping me from it. I could put an extra couple of hundred yards if I go Power Pro and the add even 100 yds 80 Mono. But I'm skeerd of the line packing in during a fight. Have you ever had this problem YellaBlazer?

I've never had a problem with Power Pro digging into the spool. When I first put the line on, I run the line through the middle of a phonebook with another book stacked on top. It puts enough tension on the spool to pack the Power Pro tight.

The only thing you need to look for is if your spool has a knob or catch to keep the line from slipping. If you don't have one, you're going to have to use a few yards of mono first. If not, the entire spool will slip and you're drag will become useless.

Free lining, 4ft Floro leader......jiging, tie direct to lure......trolling........4ft of wire leader........easy enough. No need for all them knots and different kinda line all over the place......
