Good Start to My Days Off

I got home and my dad was there, first question out of his mouth was "you going fishing". If your dad ask you to take him fishing you have to. I am pretty sure that's one of the rules. He's getting older so I don't miss an opportunity to make a trip with him. Hooked up the boat and managed to be on the water for 12:30. Put of of ICY and headed out the 4 Mile. Tide was still falling a little so we hit the sandbar/reef directly to the east out of the 4 Mile. Water was brown and murky but fishable. Fishing with dad means shrimp and a poppin cork and he went to work on the puppy drum. He must have caught 4 or 5 but all under 16". I didn't get anything to bite on artificial so after about 15 minutes, I convinced him there was better fish further on. By this time the tide was turning around. There was still water coming out of the marsh, but the water in the bay was rising. I find when this happens lots of bait seems to be trapped at the mouth's of cuts coming out of the marsh by the converging water. Well we pulled up to one of my favorite ones and first cast, boom 24" red. After that is was on for the next 30 minutes. My third fish was a 22" trout that went 3.8 lbs. I have caught lots of reds and flounder at this spot but never a trout. Needless to say I had visions of sugar plums dancing in my head. I thought the trout dance was on. I only caught one more. By the time the rising tide had over taken the water coming out of the marsh we had 7 reds and 2 trout and the bite was off. My old man was happy and so was I, but I don't like to leave without a limit of something. I asked him if he wanted to run out to the point and he was game so I put the spurs to the Cape Horn and we ran across the bay. Got to the trash pile to find some beautiful water and 7 or 8 other boats. They were piled up on each other which usually means 1 or 2 are catching and the rest are potlicking. Fishing nut to butt doesn't interest me so I kept my distance and trolled around a little. Managed to pick up 1 trout which resulted calling the nearest boat over to see what was going on. I just cranked up and left after a few more cast. Figured if there were 8 boats at the Trash Pile, there would be 80 in the Cove so I headed west. Water was pretty in the bay until we past the Delcambre then it started getting murky. By the time we hit Chene it was brown, low, and muddy. Never catch there unless there is at least 3.5' to 4' of water and there was about 2'. Made it a little further west and picked up out last 3 reds near the mouth of the Boston. Most of the reds and trout were caught on Black/Chart Matrix Vortex on a 1/4 oz jig head or a Jenny Jig Redfish Spinner. A couple came on H&H swim baits, and dad picked up 2 on dead shrimp all on bottom. Had one over 27" the rest were all slot. Turned out to be a good day on the water with my dad. Would have been good regardless, the fish just made it that much better.
