Towing with a 1/2 ton?

I?m going to be in the market for a new truck soon. I?m pretty set on either a Silverado/Sierra 1500. My wife and I have also been discussing the possibility of buying a camper within the next few years, more than likely a travel trailer. I?m looking at the towing capacity with these trucks and the numbers are much higher than I expected. With the 5.3 V8 and max trailering package it?s 11,100lbs and the 6.2 V8 with max trailering package is 12,500lbs. Do any of you guys tow a camper or big trailer with a half ton? If so, how does it handle a big load and do you have any recommendations? I know a diesel would be much better, and I prefer the look of a bigger 3/4 ton, but I won?t be buying a camper for at least a few years if we even buy one at all and would rather not have the extra cost on the truck and expensive maintenance that comes with a diesel.
