You can hunt the Lacassine refuge, not the pool. Most everyone hunts south of the intercoastal off of the west pipeline canal. Walking out there is not fun. Hunted there for years and my body just could not take it anymore. I would also do some scouting before I go. Not easy huntin. But if you want it bad enough, it can pay off big time.

Yes, that is how you get to Gary's landing.

From Lake Arthur, take Hwy 14 west about 4 miles to Hwy 3056 and turn left [south]. Go about 3 miles and Gary's will be on the left. The Lacassine headquarters is straight ahead about 1/2 mile.

The cannel's are all deep.....but some of the open water "lakes" are very shallow [atleast they were many years ago...last time I was there].

Default Refuge

My advice is google earth the refuge; pick out an area you like then try to make a hunt there.

Launch your boat right @ sunrise so you can see where your going; and dont have to fight the crowd.

You can then figure out if "your" spot is vacant.

Dont worry about starting your hunt early, the birds fly all morning there.

Good Luck

best public land hunting around but it's best to bring pirogue and then carry decoys even further by foot

Gary's is West out of Lake Arthur on Hwy 14. Take the Lowry Hwy 3056 south and follow all the way to the end. The refuge headquarters are down this road right before Gary's Landing.
If you put in at the Cameron launch on the south side of the lake you can just go that way but a little farther drive. But its just like going to Grand Lake and the locks.
If you need more info let me know. I don't duck hunt much out there but do deer hunt.

You can launch at Myers Landing also. It is not too far from the refuge.

I have not been to Gary's landing or the Refuge headquartes in 15+ years. Has the headquarters buildings been reloacated? The headquarters use to be on past Gary's landing down a gravel road with big Oak (?) trees....a very pretty setting.

Fool, if I remember right.........Hwy 3056 does/did (?) have big Oaks along it. But I think it was paved down to where Gary's landing is located then it is rocks.

As I said, the last time I was down there was before you were born.....about 1987. That was just after they opened the Refuge up for Bow hunting. I learned how the dress when hunting where the mosquotes were bad.....very, very bad.

I believe the headquarters are now on 27 where they combined lacassine and cameron prairie all into one location.

There is still a headquarter office down 3056. It is right before you turn on the road to go to Gary's Landing. The refuge road if I remember is also paved now.

The refuge road has been paved for a few years now. The road to Gary's which is River Road also has a new pave on it. But the rest is still the same if you know what I mean
