04-up F-150 SPARK PLUG PROB
Well hope you don't have two...the plugs break when they are extracting them with a "special tool" that Ford has distributed out. If they break get ready for labor costs to sky rocket. A guy that works with me is having his replaced. 6 of the 8 plugs broke off. secondly some of the carbon and plug that broke fell into the head. NOW the whole engine has to be removed to extract the crap!!!! He is sick right now.

one of my employees just went through this....he ended up changing the motor after fighting it for about six months. He was doing it him self. He said it was cheaper to get a motor out of a junk yard than pay them to fix it.

yep it's a engineering design flaw, the coil over plugs suck, the original problem was not enough threads tapped into aluminum housing. the issue was fixed I think in 05 or maybe 06.
there are several issues that ford could have done to improve the 5.4 that wasn't done. I had a 2001 5.4 16 valve that i changed the plugs, it was a MFer, but none broke. I soaked them with WD-40 and they came right out. do a google search on it, tons of info Bad thing is that I dont know if my engine is one of the bad ones, or if the warranty covers this issue. Ford should warranty the work when this happens. gov motors vortec is better than ford triton, i like the rest of the fords better tho... |

Here you go, this is a tsb directed at all ford dealership mechanic's on changing plugs and taken broken ones out. Now, as you can guess some dealer's might not even know about this so I would print this and bring to service advisor!!! LOL

Had this happen to me in September!!!!!
The Ford garage should know about this and they have special procedures. I brought mine to a shop in Lafayette to get my oil and lube done before I went on a dove hunting trip in September. He calls me back and said my plugs would need changing in 5k miles so I said go ahead. He calls back and says he will need $2k to remove the engine because he broke one off.
I told him to stop, I had it towed to where I bought it(Arceneaux Ford) and they changed all the plugs and removed the piece for about $500. It's a common problem, so I think it's a mechanics fault if he doesn't know common problems with the vehicle he's working on. I refused to pay for them to break my spark plugs. But Ford really should have issued a recall on this...Really bad business... |

I absolutely agree with this. My problem with buying GM now is that they took a .gov handout. I will not buy foreign, and until dodge actually builds a real truck around the cummins i won't buy it either. |

I was told by my service shop that the spark plugs break off an 90% of ford f -150z
horrible design and nothing that ford will do to warranty it.... sucks to have this issue... I had $2200 of service work done on mine a few months bk. I rolled over 100 k miles and the bill stacked up. Thankfullly I didn't need the spark plugs changed!!!!! |
