I say keep looking. That's not what I'd call a spectacular deal.

There is a place in Mobile that you can get a brand new one for less than that.

I'm going to Northshore Trailer Sales in Pearl River tomorrow to see what they got. Barrett, do you know the name of the folks in Mobile? Can I have a standard A/C unit installed in the wall of the trailer instead of one of those camper-style deals that sit on top? I can just plug it up when the trailer is at my house.

they make 110 volt camper ones and just put a plug on it instead of hardwiring it, you could probably even run it with an inverter(not sure how many amps they pull) but they do make some rather large inverters

I got a quote from Northshore of $3960 for a Lark 7x16 tandem axle w/brakes. It has a ramp door and front side door but is not insulated.

I personnally have not seen any that were insulated. A buddy of mine bought one and made a camper out of his but he had to insulate and install paneling his self. To mount window unit you would a least have to 'beef-up' the area where the a/c would go. The cargo trailers just have a thin skin of aluminum on them.

I ordered a trailer today...with insulation. Now, my problem is air conditioning. What do y'all think about installing a 5k btu window unit in the front wall of the trailer?

Default You can do it

There is Litte Debby deliveryman around here that has an air conditioner in the front of his trailer.

Depending on how much insulation and what size trailer you are getting......you might not need a unit quite that big. If the insulation is only 3" or 4" get the 5k unit. But, this is just a edu. guess.

But it is better to be bigger than you need than too small.

Mr. G, I think the insulation will be 2 1/2" on the walls and 2" in the ceiling. They might spray it in....supposed to let me know tomorrow. They're insulating the floor, also. I told them I wanted the highest R-Value available.

About the A/C......the description for a 5k BTU says it'll cool 150 sq. ft. The trailer is only 14x7 so that should be adequate. Like you said...better to have too much than not enough. The main goal here is to keep the humidity out and keep the temp comfortable. I'm not looking to keep it as cool as it is in the storage unit. I'm gonna have my carpenter to frame around the hole for the A/C so it will be sturdy and won't put stress on those walls. They tend to be a bit flimsy. The ceiling, walls and floor on this unit are on 16" centers. I want a V-Nose, but, that will depend on where I decide to mount the A/C. You think the front of side would be better?

A house A/C unit is designed to provide about 25 BTU's per sq ft. But a house is fairly well insulated......What kind of insulation will be used?

14 x 7 = 98 sq ft.

5000 Btu / 98 = 51 Btu / sq ft.

This is about twice as much cooling as a typical house......But I don't think your trailer will be as well insulated as a house. If you could always park it in a shaded spot....this would really help.

Installing it in the front would be better spot as far as less wind while traveling and easier to support. But this would require the cool air to be farther from the back door. If the back door is opened to load or unload.......all the cool air will be gone from the back of the trailer. The A/C unit would cool the front of the trailer better and it would take a while to cool the back.

Load the trailer with the stuff that needs the most cooling.....up front.

Are you going to install any shelves? If you stack boxes.....how are you going to keep them from falling?

I wonder if he could use those things they have at meat packing houses and grocery stores. The plastic flap things that are hung vertically that you push your way thru. Seems like they may keep some of the cold air confined in the trailer. This is kinda like a Salty Cajun Experiment. Salty may have a new patent. Salty's World Famous Ice Cream Wagons...
