If your kids can handle a 12 gauge, I would suggest a .270. Break them in on 100 grain bullets then move up to 130's when hunting. Savage makes a decent rifle for around $300. If you can find one used I'd stay away from wood; they tend to kick a little harder. From my experience a .243 will result in cripples. I don't have experience with 7mm 08, but I'd stay away from the 7mm mag. I've heard that the 25 06 is a good alternative to the .243. I've seen it kill plenty of deer, but it may be out of your price range in this area. Just my two cents. Hope it helps.

7mm-08 is the ticket. I own 5 of them. Me all 3 boys & wife shoot them. Just about all I use & have been shooting it since '91. Remington & Savage make youth models as does Ruger in the compact which is a little more pricey but something they can shoot forever & won't out grow.

I bought a .243 Howa bolt action when my son was 7 years old, he's now 13. He's killed several deer, every year since then without a problem. I've been really impressed with it and would highly recommend one.

My brother in law bought his kids a savage .243 a few years ago and they have killed a few deer with it so far with no cripples. That things groups very well also, i was impressed. I saw a youth model browning .243 at G&H in gueydan the other day too. Not sure what your looking to spend but it was $600 i think

The 7mm-08 is a great round. Be sure to use really good hearing protection when introducing your kids to high powered rifles. The 7mm-08 has fairly light recoil, but you can make it even better for your kids if you buy the Remington Reduced recoil ammo in 7mm-08. I think Academy has it.
My brother switched from a 30-06 to a 7mm-08 about ten years ago. I have killed three deer with his rifle and it's very sweet. You can actually watch the impact of the bullet because the recoil is so moderate. My brother has killed well over a hundred deer with his 7-08. He uses the Remington 140 grain core-lokts and swears by them. Nothing wrong with a .243 either. Just use good bullets like the 100 grain remington or the 100 grain Federal Fusions, or, better yet, the 85 grain TTSX from Federal. The TTSX is an all copper bullet and will exit the deer giving you a blood trail damn near every time. Good luck. |

308 308 308 308 308 308 is all I will say. I got a Tikka T3 last season and added a limbsaver slip on kick pad. Has the recoil of a 22. My 5 year old shot it with no problem. I shot a buck with it last year at 112 yards. Blew the heart to nothing. If you and your kids want to shoot it just let me know. I will be in br next saturday but live around new orleans.

We have put down several elk with a .257 roberts good kid and ladys rifle just cant take those mile long shots. Ammo might be a little high but if the kids are enjoying pulling that trigger and not getting thumped they will be a better shot and more confident.

xs7 youth marlin bolt action
Got my boys each one for xmass. Has the savage trigger. Sweet shooting gun. Looks just like a remington 700. I put a 3x9x50 nikon prostaff on them. Have about $500 into each with scope. Promiss you wont regret it. Comes in most calibers. I choose .308win. This gun will overlap shots at a 100yrds. |
