All dogs are different. Though my dog might not be the greatest, he is pretty good and he is very friendly with young pups. He will play with them but if u pull out the dummy, he's all business. That puppy is the least of his worries after that. I have gone with a few of my buddies with young pups when their dogs are too afraid to go in the water or just beginning training. Just let them sit and watch my dog. And before u know it, they are in the water. Some may think it doesn't work, but i beg to differ.

I never had a dog that was scared of water.
When my last dog was still squatting to piss, I was throwing a dummy out and letting him retrieve it. I was throwing from a shell road that was real high, so it was easy to throw pretty far. I chunked it too far and it landed on an island. He had only picked up from the water or on dry land. He would only swim around, he didn't go on the island. So in all my infinite wisdom, I didn't want to lose the dummy, I chunked a rock from the road towards the island. He didn't see it hit the island, so I would chunk it so he would see it hit the water. I thought I would chunk them farther and farther till he got to the island. Wrong. The first rock hit the water, he went down and didn't come up for around 10 seconds. I thought he was drowning. He came up for a couple seconds and went down again. He was looking for the rock. I like to never got him to give up on that rock. |

I stand corrected, my bad. Been busy all day and posting from the phone. I agree that a young pup afraid of the water or not understanding the game of retrieve will benefit from observing.
