Default Inexpensive handheld GPS

I'm looking for a hand held GPS to carry in the woods. Does anyone have experience with any that won't break the bank?
I saw the Garmin eTrex online. Would this be a decent one?

Thanks for any recommendations!

Ive had a garmin etrex (camo) that I got as a graduation present in 2005. It still works. Its been from venice, LA to Northern Illinois and everywhere in between and still has spots marked. Its a little off (20-30') which sucks when looking for a stand at 3am.

This is it... Its D/C'd now, bu still a bada$$ GPS in my opinion

We've been through a couple of Garmin eTrex. Quality is excellent. I don't think we've had one make it past 5 years, but we use it all the time, and a lot of the use is difficult, riding in the boat, the car, the bike, hiking, hunting, etc. The one I'm using now is an eTrex HC. When it dies from abuse, I'll go get another one as similar to it as I can find.

Got a friend that has an etrex. Works good but not in the woods. Always loses signal.

I have the Etrex 30 works good. make sure if you get a Garmin that it has the high sensitivity receiver. I some models it has the H after the model. That being said most of the newer models like the newest Etrex series also add Glonass satellites for greater sensitivity. I would recommend bypassing the Etrex 30 to the next model I think is the Dakota. Not because it's a bad model but the price is very close and they use the same program. The Dakota has a larger screen that is also a touch screen.

Have had an eTrex for awhile and they are good for the price. They will only get you so close though. If you are in the wide open, they are accurate, but in the thick woods with limited receivers your accuracy goes down (20-30 feet accuracy) which isn't that bad. You get what you pay for, but the newer, more expensive ones are pretty high tech and most people only use them to about 5% of their capabilities. Have a real fancy one for work and when its working well, its awesome, but when it isn't I want to beat it up against a tree.

Get what you pay for.

I have had several Garmin's and still use them.

Etrex works.

+1 on the garmin, I have a geko that's great but it needs new batteries EVERY time its used, even turned off the batteries are almost completely dead in 3-4 days.

my 2 cents on having everything camoed out

yes it looks cool but ..... anything you put in your pocket will be dropped at some point so DONT get stuff in camo patterns unless its hangin in plain sight and not going in your pockets.

try finding anything camo pattern after it falls out of your pocket and you need to back track to find it, good luck with that! just sayin lol.
